Writing and Art Fun!

Greetings! Happy Thursday (Friday for the students). We had a busy day to end our week.

In Religion class we learned about the Seven Sacraments. We talked about each sacrament, what happens, and how God is with us in each one.

We wrapped up another week in Language Arts. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read r-controlled er, ir, ur, and or words along with words with the inflectional ending -er. After that we wrote sentences using our sight words. Following that we partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets along with Kitten's First Full Moon. We then read a nonfiction piece about the moon and completed pages in our close reading companion. Finally, we took our weekly assessment and identified adjectives in sentences.

In Math class today we practiced subtracting two two-digit numbers without regrouping. The key to remember is that we are subtracting now and not adding.

We ended our day with a special writing/art project. We wrote about what we would do if we found a pot of gold. We then added our writing to a leprechaun craft. They look cute:

Have a wonderful weekend! See you on Monday!

Fun with Reading!

Greetings! Happy Wednesday! I don't know about you but this week is going really fast.

In Religion class today we learned that Jesus gave us the sacraments as a reminder of God's life and love. Tomorrow we will learn the names of the sacraments.

In Language Arts class we practiced using our oral vocabulary words in sentences. We also practiced reading r-controlled er, ir, ur, and or words along with words with the inflectional ending -er. Following that we practiced our sight words and vocabulary words. After all that reviewing it was time to put our skills to work. We partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets. We then read our story for the week Kitten's First Full Moon. The students really enjoyed this story.

This afternoon in class we completed pages in our close reading pages to help us build our cause and effect skills. We also practiced finding adjectives in sentences and wrote sentences using adjectives.

In Math class today we began to learn how to subtract without regrouping. We used our base ten blocks to help us solve the problems. Tomorrow we will transition to paper and pencil.

We ended our day by going to church to pray the Stations.

I want to take this time to thank everyone who has sent in hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes. Please know that they are used on a daily basis. I really appreciate all of your support. Have a good night!

Adjective Fun!

Greetings! Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had an enjoyable day today.

In Religion class today, we went to church for Adoration. We spent some quiet time praying to Jesus and asking for his guidance.

We began Language Arts by working in our literacy centers. We then jumped back into our week of learning. We answered questions using our oral vocabulary words. We used our letter tiles to spell and read r-controlled er, ir, ur, and or words. Following that we learned how to read words with the inflectional ending -er and learned how that ending changes the meaning of the word. Next we practiced using our sight words and vocabulary words in sentences. Finally, we reread A Bird Named Fern and wrote cause and effect examples from the story.

This afternoon in Language Arts we read our decodable reader and answered cause and effect questions from the story. We then spent time working with adjectives. We practiced using them in sentences. We also wrote sentences using numbers as adjectives. The students were each given a die. They rolled it and wrote a sentence like "I have" whatever number they rolled (I have six dogs). The students loved using the die.

In Math class today we reviewed adding with and without regrouping. We are very good with this. Tomorrow we will switch our focus to subtraction.

Because of Stations tomorrow, we will not have Gym. Have a good night!

Fun with Flashlights!

Greetings! Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a nice weekend! It was surely nice to see the sun shining. We had fun outside today during recess!

In Religion class today we talked about ways we celebrate God's love. We said that when we pray, sing, and listen at Mass we are worshiping God. Today, we also completed Week 1 of the ARISE program (I am a week behind). We talked about making good choices during Lent.

We began Language Arts by working in our literacy centers. We then began a new week of learning. We learned five new oral vocabulary words (observe, vast, certain, remained, and thoughtful). Next we worked on making predictions as we listened to a folktale. Following that we learned how to blend and read words with r-controlled er, ir, ur, and or. After that we learned our new sight words and vocabulary words. We ended the morning by putting all of our skills to the test by reading a fantasy story called A Bird Named Fern

This afternoon in Language Arts we learned about adjectives. We learned that they are words that describe nouns. To help us learn about adjectives, the students ate a slice of apple and then wrote words to describe it. They really liked this!

In Penmanship class this week we will be writing H and h.

In Spanish class today, the students drew a pet shop with a dog, cat, fish, bird, and hamster. When everyone was finished, we labeled each pet in Spanish.

We continue to practice adding with regrouping. We are getting much better at beginning with the ones.

Finally, we ended our day with Science. Today we talked about light. We identified objects that give off light. We also learned that shadows are made when something blocks light. Using flashlights, the students traced different shadows that they made using objects in the classroom. Thank you to everyone who sent in a flashlight.

Have a great night!

Fun in the Sun!

Greetings! Happy Thursday! Today was a fun in the sun day in first grade. We really enjoyed wearing our sunglasses all day. We also had fun stretching out on our beach towels this afternoon and reading. It really was a neat sight to see in first grade!

In Religion class today we talked about how Jesus celebrated God's love. We talked about how he joined with his family and friends to sing songs of praise.

We wrapped up yet another week of learning in Language Arts. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read r-controlled -ar words, wrote the plurals for irregular plural words, and wrote sentences using our sight words. We also partner read our story A Lost Button before taking our weekly assessment. Finally, we practiced using conjunctions in sentences.

In Math class today we transitioned to paper and pencil (or in our case whiteboards and markers) as we solved addition problems with regrouping. The key here is to remember to begin with the ones and work backwards.

In Social Studies class today we talked about buying, saving, and trading. For some reason, the students know a lot about money!

Just a reminder that there is not school tomorrow! Have a wonderful weekend! See you on Monday!

Wacky Wednesday!

Greetings on this Wacky Wednesday! The students really enjoyed their wacky hair today!

In Religion class today we talked about how God each calls us to a vocation.

In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary words and practiced reading r-controlled -ar words, our sight words, and our vocabulary words. We also practiced matching a singular word with its irregular plural. Following that we partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets. We finished the morning by reading a story from the beloved characters Frog and Toad. The students really enjoyed A Lost Button. This afternoon we completed pages in our close reading companion. We also practiced joining sentences together using the words and, but, or, so, because.

For Gym class today we headed outside to the sunshine. Yes, it was breezy, but it was nice to get outside and run off some of that energy.

In Math class today we began learning how to add with regrouping. We only did this with base ten blocks today. Tomorrow we will transition to paper and pencil.

Tomorrow is our Fun in the Sun Day. Students are asked to bring a beach towel, sunglasses, and a book to read.

Tomorrow we will also visit the library and have our Spelling test.

Oh! The Place We'll Go!

Greetings! Today was another great day in first grade. I loved seeing the students dressed as their future careers. Thank you for helping them get dressed up this morning. They really enjoyed it today!

In Religion class today we wrapped up our chapter on our parish. We reviewed that we belong to a parish, that the pastor is the leader in the parish, and that a parish works together to help others.

We began Language Arts by working in our literacy centers. Then, we got started with our weekly learning. We reviewed our oral vocabulary words by answering questions using the words. We then used our letter tiles to spell and read r-controlled -ar words. After that we reviewed irregular plurals. Following that we practiced using our sight words and vocabulary words in sentences. Next, we reread A Barn Full of Hats and wrote about the character's points of views. We did the same thing as we read our decodable reader.

In Math class today we continued to practiced addition without regrouping. We are doing very well with this. Tomorrow we will begin adding with regrouping.

We ended our day by attending Stations of the Cross. We remember the love that Jesus showed for us as we pray them.

Tomorrow is Wacky Wednesday! The students may wear crazy hair to school. It is also Gym day. Don't forget your sneakers!

Slipper Day!

Greetings! Welcome to Read Across America Week 2020! This is one of my favorite weeks as we get to celebrate the life of one of my favorite authors: Dr. Seuss. Today, was slipper day in honor of The Sleep Book. The students loved wearing them all day.

In Religion class today we looked at the final 7 Stations of the Cross. We talked about each one and colored our Station booklets. Tomorrow we will pray the Stations at 2:00.

We began Language Arts by working in our literacy centers. Then we began a new week of learning. We learned our new oral vocabulary words (distinguish, classify, organize, startled, and entire). We then worked on making predictions as we listened to a classic folktale. From there we learned how to blend and read r-controlled ar words. Following that we learned our new sight words and vocabulary words. Then it was time to put our knowledge to the test as we read A Barn Full of Hats, a fantasy story about animals finding hats.

This afternoon we learned how to join sentences using and, but, or, so, and because. To help us remember the sound of ar we made a pirate holding a chest of ar words. Here is what it looks like:

Finally, we read Oh! The Places You'll Go. Afterwards we illustrated what we want to be when we grow up. We just have to put the finishing touches on that tomorrow.

In Penmanship this week we will be focusing on m and M.

In Spanish class today we learned the names of pets: cat, dog, bird, fish, and hamster.

In Math class today we practiced adding two digit numbers without regrouping. We learned that we can solve them by drawing a picture or just adding the ones and tens. We will continue to practice this tomorrow.

Tomorrow is Career day. The students may wear their dress for their future career. This does not need to be over the uniform. Have a great night!
