Trusting in Jesus!

Greetings! Happy Thursday! I hope everyone had a terrific day! The children were so excited to return to the playground for recess. It was really hard for them to come in.

In Religion class today, we talked about how Jesus calmed the stormy sea. The Apostles trusted that Jesus would help them, and we, too, trust that Jesus will help us in our times of need. We made a poster to help us remember this.

In Language Arts class, we answered questions using our oral vocabulary words, read r-controlled words and words with the inflectional ending -er. We also worked on our fluency and comprehension skills. We partner read a story from our decodable reader booklets. We also read a nonfiction piece about the moon. After reading that piece, we completed pages in our Reading/Writing workshop that focused on main idea. Finally, we did some St. Patrick's Day writing. We wrote about the lucky charms in our life. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

In Math class today, we measured various classroom objects using both paper clips and pennies. We loved screaming stop when the balance was level.

Have a great night!

Jesus Still Feeds Us!

Greetings! Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone is having a great week!

In Religion class today we reviewed the miracle of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with five loaves and 2 fish. We created a basket to remind us that Jesus still feeds us today!

In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary words, read r-controlled er, ir, ur, and or words, read words with the ending -er, and read our sight words. To help us build our fluency and comprehension we partner read a story from our decodable reader booklets. We also read Kitten's First Full Moon. After reading this story, we completed pages in our Reading/Writing Companion that focused on cause and effect. We really enjoyed reading today because we got to read with our flashlights! Reading is so much fun in the dark!

This afternoon in Language Arts, we practiced writing sentences with adjectives. Today, we rolled a die and wrote a sentence using the number we rolled.

In Math class today, we again brought out the balance to measure objects. Today, we put an object on one side and added linking cubes to the other side to see how much the object weighed. The messy glue was the heaviest needing 79 cubes!

Here are some pictures from our Art project last Friday and our Dr. Seuss projects from this week. Enjoy!

Spring Fever!

Greetings! Happy Tuesday! How many of us have spring fever tonight?

We began our day by going to church for Adoration. We spent some quiet time praying to Jesus. It was a great way to start our day.

We continued with our week of learning in Language Arts. We began by answering questions using our oral vocabulary words. We then used our letter tiles to spell and read r-controlled er, ir, ur, and or words. Following that, we learned how to blend and read words with the ending -er. After that we practiced using our sight words in sentences. Next, we learned our vocabulary words for the week: leaped and stretched. We wrote sentences using the words and talked about shades of meaning. We ended the morning focused on comprehension. We reread A Bird Named Fern. We then wrote about why this is a fantasy story and wrote cause and effect examples from the story.

This afternoon in Language Arts we practiced using adjectives in sentences.

In Math class today, we switched our focus on measurement to weight. We pulled out the balance to hep us. We weighed various classroom objects to see which ones were heavy and which ones were light. We had lots of fun doing this.

We ended our day with some Dr. Seuss fun. Last week, we heard the story  One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Today, we did activities with goldfish crackers. We measured pictures of various fish using our crackers. We then created a fish using our handprint and measure our handprint using the goldfish crackers. We really enjoyed this!

Have a great night!

Fun with Adjectives!

Greetings! Happy Monday! I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

In Religion today, we started to learn about some of the miracles Jesus did. Today, we read the story of Jesus multiplying the five loaves of bread and two fish to feed 5,000 people. We also talked about how Jesus still feeds us today in the Eucharist.

We began a new week of learning in Language Arts; this week, we are reading about things we see in the sky. We began by learning our five new oral vocabulary words (observe, vast, certain, remained, thoughtful). We then worked on making predictions as we read the folktale about why the sun and moon are in the sky. Next, we learned how to blend and read r-controlled -er, -ir, -ur, and -or words. Following that, we learned our new sight words (another, climb, full, great, poor, through). Finally, it was time to put everything together and read A Bird Named Fern

This afternoon we learned about adjectives, words that describe nouns. We looked at and tasted an apple to help us generate adjectives for that apple.

In Math class today, we continued to practice measuring objects. We again used our linking cubes to help us measure pictures of Dr. Seuss characters. But, today, we added in using a ruler to help us measure.

We ended our day by praying the Stations of the Cross.

Have a good night!

Glitter!

Greetings! Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a nice day to end the first full week in March.

At Mass this morning, we remembered Sts. Felicity and Perpetua. Fr. Brian called us to have courage like these women did in living the Gospel.

We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences. We read r-controlled -ar words and spelled the plurals of words when the final y is changed to an i. We also wrote sentences using our sight words and took our weekly assessment.

In Math class today, we had fun with measurement. We used our linking cubes to measure different objects in the classroom. The students had so much fun walking around and measuring things.

In Science class today, we learned about how shadows change over a day. That is because the sun moves causing shadows to shrink or even switch places.

We ended our day with Art class. Today, we made a rainbow coming out of a pot of gold. We used glitter to add to the gold coins. The students were very excited with the glitter.

Have a great weekend!

Ash Wednesday!

Greetings! Happy Wednesday! Today was a good day of learning in first grade.

We began our day with Mass. Today was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. At Mass this morning, Fr. Brian reminded us to spend the next 40 days praying, fasting, and helping others. The students were excited to receive ashes.

In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary words, read r-controlled -ar words, spelled and read plurals where the y is changed to an i, and read our sight words. We also practiced using our vocabulary words in sentences. To help build our fluency and comprehension, we partner read a story from our decodable reader booklets. We also read A Lost Button, which is from a Frog and Toad book. We loved this story. After reading it, we completed pages in our Reading/Writing companion that focused on characterization.

This afternoon in Language Arts, we practiced joining sentences together. We also wrote about what we would buy if we found a pot of gold. Finally, we created a treasure chest of r-controlled -ar words.

In Math class today, we learned how to use a start line to organize objects. This helped us see which object was the shortest and which one was the longest.

Just a reminder that the students do not have school tomorrow. We will see everyone on Friday! Have a great night!

We then worked on making predictions as we read the classic story "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." Next, we learned how to blend and read r-controlled -ar words; this is where we said that we will be talking like a pirate this week. After that, we learned our new sight words for the week (four, large, none, only, put, round). Finally, we read A Barn Full of Hats which helped us practice reading r-controlled -ar words and our sight words in sentences.

This afternoon in Language Arts we learned how to combine sentences using the words and, but, and or. We also started our celebration of Dr. Seuss. We read the classics The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. Afterwards, we wrote about what happened when the Cat in the Hat came to our house. We added it to a craft.

To build our fluency and comprehension skills, we partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets. We also read a short nonfiction piece about insects.

In Math class today, we continued to practice subtraction. Today, we solved problems with and without regrouping. Our key is to pay attention to the ones and not get into the habitat of automatically regrouping.

Our Science class was messy today. We talked about our teeth and what we need to do in order to keep them healthy. We talked about brushing them twice a day, flossing daily, and eating healthy foods. The students then got to work cleaning a dirty tooth (a hard boiled egg soaked in Coke Cola). Using toothpaste and a toothbrush, they made those teeth pearly white again.

We ended our day with Art class. We did not get to finish our project. We completed a directive drawing on how to draw a robot. Next week, we will use water color paint to color our robot.

Have a great weekend!

We reread A Team of Fish and wrote about its main idea and the details in the story.

This afternoon in Language Arts we practiced using the verbs has and have in sentences. We also finished our groundhog writing project from yesterday. They turned out cute.

In Math class, we learned how to add with regrouping. We began by using a base ten blocks to help us see when we need to regroup (when the ones value is 10 or more). As we got more comfortable with regrouping, we switched to our whiteboards. They key for us is to remember to add the ones first.

Here is a picture from our 100th day writing project last week.

Have a great night!

Happy 100th Day of School!

Greetings! Happy 100th Day of School! It is hard to believe that we are already celebrating 100 days of learning. It feels like we just begun!

Before our big celebration, we had some learning to do.

We began our day at Mass with our Faith Families. After Mass, we were treated to hot chocolate and Oreos. What a great way to end our Catholic Schools Week celebration.

In Math class today, we continued to practice adding two two-digit numbers. We are getting better at this.

In Science class, we learned about how light is used to send signals. We used flashlights and colors to tell a partner what action to do. Thank you for sending in flashlights to help with this activity!

After lunch and recess, it was time to celebrate! We colored a candy jar filled with 100 marbles. The best part is that we got to use markers to do this.

Next, we worked in groups to make designs using 100 objects. We made designs using 100 cups, 100 pattern blocks, 100 connecting wheels, and 100 wooden blocks. Here are some of our designs.

Finally, we created a self portrait of us at 100 years old. The students loved crinkling the paper to give themselves wrinkles. After creating our portrait, we wrote about something we would do when we are 100 years old.

And, of course, we could not forget about Sunday: Groundhog Day! We each made a prediction of whether or not Phil will see his shadow. We are spilt between early spring and 6 more weeks of winter.

Have a wonderful weekend!
