The End of August!

Greetings! Happy Thursday! I hope everyone had a great last day of August.

In Religion class today, we talked about how God wants us to pray to him. We talked about how God wants to hear from us and how he never gets tired of us praying.

We finally began our first week of first grade Language Arts learning. This week we will be reading stories about school. We began by learning two new oral vocabulary words (learn and subjects). Next, we worked on visualizing as we read This School Year Will Be the Best. After that, we learned how to blend and read short a words. Finally, we learned our four new sight words (does, not, school, what). We were very excited to learn new things today.

We wrapped up our back-to-school character lessons by talking today about the difference between tattling and reporting. We said that it is good to use kind words to help others and that it is not good to try to get someone into trouble.

In Math class today, we continued to work with comparing numbers. We used our linking cubes to show two numbers and then identified which number what the greatest and which number was the least.

We had our first Social Studies class of the year. Today we talked about our family. We talked about things we do with them and things we learn from them.

Have a great night!

Review Wrap Up!

Greetings! Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone had a great day!

In Religion class today, we talked about how God gave us many gifts. We also talked about how he taught us the Our Father.

We wrapped up our Language Arts review today; we are ready to become fluent first grade readers. Today, we reviewed the letters u, g, w, x, v, q, j, y, and z. We also reviewed the words she, with, for, and, have, see, said, was. We will be adding more sight words to memory this year.

This afternoon in Language Arts, we learned how to work in centers. We worked with a small group in both a math and literacy center. These centers will help us practice skills and build our knowledge in both math and reading.

In Math class today, we learned the words more, fewer, and same. We used our linking to compare towers using these words.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a dress down day. Students may wear shorts, a Holy Name shirt, and sneakers to school. Have a great night!

Our First Friday!

Greetings! Happy Friday! It was a short week but a good week to get us back in the groove. I can tell the children are really enjoying first grade. They were a bit chatty today. I love their enthusiasm.

At Mass today, we prayed for our teachers, parents, and us. Fr. Brian also talked to us about praying more.

We began our Language Arts review. We reviewed the letters m, s, a, p, and t. We also reviewed the words I, like, do, to, you, he, and can. Our goal is to review concepts learned and mastered in kindergarten before beginning our first grade work.

For the next five days, we will be talking about what it means to be a fantastic first grade. Today, we talked about what it means to be respectful. We sorted examples of respectful and disrespectful behavior and drew an example of respectful behavior.

As a get to know us activity, we completed pendant flags showing our favorite color, animal, and food along with a picture of our family.

In Math class, we began our chapter on the numbers 1-10. We used linking cubes to show various numbers on a ten frame. We also practiced counting a collection of objects.

We ended our day with Art class. We created a school bus. The students did a nice job of following directions to put the bus together.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to First Grade!

Greetings! Happy First Day of First Grade. Thank you so much for reading the classroom blog. I will be posting daily about the learning taking place in Room 101. My goal is for you to be informed about what is happening in the classroom. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Today was an awesome first day of first grade. The students were so excited to come in and I was so excited to start getting to know them. We spent the first hour unpacking, filling our desks with books, and learning where things are in our classroom.

Next, we talked about what took them so long to get to first grade. I loved hearing about their summer adventures. We then read You're Finally Here and talked about what we hope to learn this school year. We drew a picture of what we hope to learn and wrote about it before adding it to a craft. Here it is:

Then, we read The Pigeon Has to Go to School. After reading this story, we talked about why we have to go to school. Again, we wrote our answer and colored a picture. Here are some of the finished products:

After lunch, we practiced writing our ABCs and numbers. We also had our first Math Meeting. Every day, we will gather to talk about the calendar, explore place value concepts, and learn about graphs.

We ended our day by going over to church. We reviewed our church manners and are excited about our first Mass tomorrow.

Thank you for a great first day! I'm so excited to see what the year will bring!

Good Night!
