Friday of Firsts!

Greetings! Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great day to end their week. We had one busy day of firsts in first grade.

We began our day with Mass. Today at Mass, Fr. Brian had a blessing of the bookbags. All of the students took their bookbags to church and after the homily, Fr. Brian blessed them with holy water.

Language Arts was full of firsts today. We began class by using our oral vocabulary words in sentences and reading short a words and words with the inflected ending -s. After that we wrote sentences using our sight words; the students did this independently and did a great job with it. We also took our first reading assessment of the year; I was quite proud of them for they really paid attention to what we were doing. We ended class by identifying sentences.

We did take a break from our Language Arts work to head to the library. We were all excited to get a book to take home. Please make sure to return all books by next Friday!

After Language Arts, we had our first Spelling test of the year. The students were very excited about this.

Then it was time for Math. Today we wrapped up our study of the numbers 0-10 by taking a test. Next week we will begin learning about number bonds.

After all the tests, it was time for a break. In Science class, we talked about all the different ways an animal moves. So, the students were broken into groups. Each cube was given a cube with pictures of animals on it. They took turns rolling the cube and acting out how that animal moves. They loved this!

We ended our day with Art. Today we painted for the first time. We made owls using stamps. We still need to add eyes and wings to the owls. I will post pictures of the finished products on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Greetings! Well, excitement was in the air today in first grade. We were quite excited for picture day. We could hardly wait to have our pictures taken and could not contain the excitement once we did!

In Religion class today we talked about how God uniquely created us and made us different from the plants and animals. We are able to love, know, and serve God and others.

We had a busy day in Language Arts. Class was interrupted by pictures and Guidance. So, we had to continue the learning this afternoon. This morning, we practiced using our oral vocabulary words in sentences. We then used our dry erase markers and a whiteboard to spell and read short a words and words with the inflected ending -s. After that we partner read a story in our decodable reader. Following that we talked about what we can learn from photographs in a story. We ended the morning by writing sentences correctly.

This afternoon we partner read Nat and Sam. We also read a nonfiction piece about school rules and completed pages in our close reading companion. To end our day, we created a short a apple tree. On each apple, we wrote a short a word. It was a good way to end our day.

In Math class today we reviewed concepts related to the numbers 1-10. Tomorrow we will be taking our first Math test of the year.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. We have Mass which will include the blessings of bookbags. We also have our first Spelling test. We will be visiting the library. And we have Art. Lots of doings' going on!

In Religion today we talked about how God made people. We discussed how each one of us is different yet special. We also talked about how God wants us to care for his creation.

We had a busy day in Language Arts. We practiced using our oral vocabulary words in sentences. We then used sound boxes to stretch words and identify all of the sounds in words. After that we practiced reading short a words and words with inflected ending -s. Following that we partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets. We ended the morning by reading and discussing Nat and Sam, a realistic fiction story about a boy in school.

This afternoon we completed pages in our close reading companion to help us build our comprehension skills. We also reviewed sentences and fragments. The students worked in groups to sort sentences and fragments.

For Gym class today we headed to the playground. We loved the sunshine and time to play with our friends.

In Math class today we used our thinking caps to solve problems. We sorted numbers into categories based on whether they were less than 5, between 5 and 7, or greater than 7. We then used linking cubes to help identify the next number in a pattern.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Picture Day!

Happy Labor Day!

Greetings on this day after Labor Day! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. It was sure nice having an extra day off!

We began our day with Religion. Today we talked about how God created the world. We took time to illustrate something that God made that we find beautiful. I just loved seeing the variety of responses from animals to flowers to mountains and everything in between.

We continued our week of learning in Language Arts today. We reviewed the oral vocabulary words we learned last Friday and then learned three new words (common, recognize, and object). Next we worked on visualizing as we read a nonfiction piece about schools around the world. Following that we used our letter tiles to spell and read short a words. Next, we learned to blend and decode words with the ending -s. After that we practiced using our sight words in sentences. We ended the morning by rereading Jack Can and writing details from the story.

This afternoon in Language Arts we read our decodable reader and answered questions about it. We also learned the components of a sentence and identified sentences on a workbook page.

In Math class today we learned how to identify one more and one less than a number. We began with linking cubes before moving to using our brains. The students had no troubles with this.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Gym day. Please wear your sneakers to school. Also, tomorrow night is Open House. I look forward to meeting with you then.

Welcome Fr. Brian!

Greetings! Happy Friday! We made it through our first full week of school. Yes, the students were tired by the end of today, but I am so proud for how hard they worked today.

We began our day with Mass. Today, we officially welcomed Fr. Brian as pastor of Holy Name Church and School. We also said good-bye to Msgr. Lockard. It was so nice to see so many priests there to celebrate with us. As much as we will miss Msgr. Lockard and wish him well, we look forward to growing closer to Jesus with the help of Fr. Brian.

We officially began first grade learning in Language Arts today. We learned two new oral vocabulary words (learn and subjects). We also practiced visualizing as we read the story This Year Will Be the Best. We finished the morning by learning how to blend and read short a words.

This afternoon we learned four new sight words (does, not, school, and what). We then put all of our skills to work as we read Jack Can, a realistic fiction story about a boy in school.

In Math class today we worked with number patterns. The students worked in groups to build number patterns using linking cubes. They quickly discovered that the patterns make steps.

In Science class we talked about all of the different body coverings animals have. The students then worked in groups to sort animals based on their coverings.

Finally it was time for Art class. Today we made giant pencils using construction paper. I loved seeing their creativity as they decorated them. Have a look:

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend! See you on Tuesday!

Finishing our Review!

Greetings! Happy Thursday! I hope everyone had a great day!

We began our day by going over to church. We spent time talking about proper church manners. We talked about how we should sit, stand, and kneel. We are quite excited to go to Mass tomorrow. Hopefully we will see some of you there.

We finished our review in Language Arts today. We reviewed the letters g, w, x, v, q, j, y, and z. We also practiced the sight words see, said, was, and, have. In addition we practiced segmenting words (saying all the sounds in a word) and rhyming words. We also worked on our comprehension skills as we read a poem about space and a nonfiction piece about different kinds of transportation. Tomorrow we will begin first grade material.

In Penmanship class we practiced the numbers 6-10.

In Math class we continued to practice identifying the greatest and least number in a set. Today the students were given number cards. After hearing two numbers, they had to hold up the number that was the greatest. We also did this for the least number.

Today we had our first Social Studies class of the year. We begin the year by talking about communities. Today we talked about how our families help us and what we learn from our families.

Tomorrow will be an action-packed day. We have Mass, Art, and lots of learning to do! Sleep tight!

Fantastic Fifth Day!

Greetings! Today was another fantastic day in first grade. We were quite excited for Gym class today. To the students, that was definitely the highlight!

In Religion class today we completed the introductory chapter in our Religion book. We briefly talked about all of the things we will be learning this year in first grade.

We continued our review in Language Arts. Today we reviewed the letters b, l, k, ck, and u. We also practiced reading the sight words she, with, for, are, me. In addition, we practiced identifying rhyming words and blending phonemes. Finally, we built our comprehension skills as we read a poem and the fable "The Tortoise and the Hare."

In Penmanship, we reviewed writing the numbers 1-5. After that we headed outside for Gym. We could not go to the playground but instead played on the parking lot. They had lots of fun burning off end of summer energy!

In Math class today we defined the terms greater and less. We used linking cubes to show two numbers an identified the greater number and the less number in each set. Once we got the hang of it, we put the cubes away and identified greater or less in a given set.

Have a great night!
