Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! Today was a great day of celebrating in first grade. After a few tech glitches on my end, we were able to get started and have fun.

In Religion today we watched a video on the first Christmas. The video reminded us what Christmas is truly about.

Then, we played our games. Thank you for helping with our Santa's surprise game. The students had really good clues; it was hard guessing what was in each bag.

After that we went on a scavenger hunt. The students were told what to find and then went and found it. I told them not to run or make a mess. I am hoping that they listened. I could tell that they really enjoyed it.

Next, we did a fun drawing project. We put the paper plate on our head and attempted to draw a Christmas tree without looking. We had many laughs.

Finally, we played a Christmas version of Head Bands. One at a time, the students closed their eyes. I showed the others a card. They then had to give clues to what was on the card.

As you can tell, we had a blast today. We ended by reading the book that Jingles brought to us. It will become part of our classroom library.

May you and your family have a blessed and Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. I'll see you in 2021!

The Polar Express!

Greetings! Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone is doing well and is ready for Christmas. I love seeing the children's excitement as we get closer to Christmas. I miss seeing it in person.

In Religion class today we continued reading the Christmas story. We read about how the shepherds and kings came to see baby Jesus. We then talked about things we could do that could be a gift for others.

We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts today. We practiced using our oral vocabulary words in sentences. We also spelled and read soft c, soft g, and inflectional ending words. In addition we practiced using our sight words in sentences. We then worked on finding rhyming words in poems. This was easy as our poems were nursery rhymes. We enjoyed reading these rhymes.

Our Christmas story today was The Polar Express, a classic Christmas story. I again loved how everyone gathered to hear this timeless story. As we finished, the students shared what they would ask Santa for as the first gift of Christmas.

In Math class today we continued to practice to add to 20. We are doing very well with this. We will be continuing this skill when we return in January.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is an early dismissal day. We will be having lots of Christmas fun tomorrow!

The Gingerbread Man!

Greetings on the day after the first major snowstorm of the season. I hope everyone made it home safely and had fun digging out. I can't remember the last time we got this much snow. It looks like we will have a white Christmas.

In Religion class today we wrapped up our chapter on how the Holy Spirit helped the church grow and how the Holy Spirit continues to help the church today.

In Language Arts class, we read the classic folktale The Gingerbread Man. After reading the story we completed pages in our close reading companion. Next we sorted sentences bases on whether they told about the past or future. Then we reviewed using commas in a series.

Our Christmas story today was Mooseletoe, a story about a moose who forgets the Christmas tree. After reading the story, we talked about the problem and how it was solved. The students were then asked to decorate Moose in a Seesaw activity.

In Penmanship, we practiced writing Q and q.

In Math class we learned new strategies to help us solve addition problems to 20. Today we used our linking cubes and a number chart. The students are encouraged to use the strategy they like best.

Greetings from my House!

Greetings! I hope everyone is doing well. The children were so excited about the snow today. I hope they have the chance to go outside and play in it.

We had a great day today. Because of the weather, I decided to teach from my house today. The students loved seeing my computer room and meeting my dog. I am very please with how well today went.

In Religion class, we talked about how the Holy Spirit helps the church today. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we, as members of the church, pray, share, and teach others about Jesus.

In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary words. We used our sound boxes to segment and blend words. We then practiced reading soft c, soft g, and -dge words and practiced reading and spelling words with inflectional endings when the final e is dropped. Finally, we practiced our sight words.

To get us into the Christmas spirit, we will be reading a Christmas story each day and completing activities that go along with the story. Today we read Santa's Stuck. After reading the story, the students talked and wrote about what they would do if Santa was stuck in their chimney.

We continued to practice the numbers to 20 in Spanish today. After reviewing the numbers, the students had to pay attention as a mystery number was quickly revealed. We then identified that mystery number in Spanish.

In Math class today we began learning strategies to solve addition problems to 20. Today we focused on drawing a picture and making 10. We will learn more strategies tomorrow.

And, just in case you were worried, Jingles found us today. Here he is:

In Religion class today we took some time to think about the meaning of the Our Father. We read it verse by verse and talked about what each verse means. We said that when we pray, it is always better to pray slowly and not rush through it and forget the meaning of the words.

In Language Arts class, we learned three new oral vocabulary words (height, model, and separate) and reviewed the words we learned yesterday. We then worked on rereading as we read a nonfiction piece about maps. Next, we used our letter tiles to spell and read words with the digraphs ch, tch, wh, and ph. After that, we learned how to blend and read words with the inflectional ending -es. Following that we practiced using our sight words in sentences. We ended our morning by rereading Which Way on the Map and writing about the main idea and details from the story.

This afternoon in Language Arts we read our decodable reader and practiced identifying the main idea and key details in it. We also practiced writing irregular plural words. Finally, we created a turkey and on each feather we wrote something we are thankful for. These turkeys will be on display for parent-teacher conferences.

In Math class today, we had fun with shapes. The students created their own shape pizza. They added pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, green peppers, onions, and cheese. After making their pizza they identified how many of each shape they used. I'll post pictures of the pizzas tomorrow.

Have a great night!

Welcome to November!

Greetings! Happy Monday! Happy November! It is hard to believe that we are starting our third full month of school. As we continue this month, please do not let your guard down. Remember to wear your mask, social distance, and wash your hands!

In Religion class today we talked about safe touches and unsafe touches. We talked about what to do when someone touches us in a way that we don't like. Finally, we talked about those we consider safe adults and can tell when someone does something we do not like.

We began Language Arts by working in our 'centers'; if we were not practicing our phonics skills then we were reading with Miss Chalich. After our center time, it was time to begin a new week of learning. We learned two new oral vocabulary words (locate, route). We then worked on rereading as we read Me on the Map. Following that we learned how to blend and read words with the digraphs ch, tch, wh, and ph. Next we learned our new sight words. Then, we read Which Way on the Map which helped us to practice our new skills. Finally, we learned some of the irregular plural words.

In Math class today, we began our new chapter which focuses on shapes. Today we reviewed the characteristics of squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles and practiced sorting shapes by size, color, and shape.

This afternoon we had our annual All Saints' Day Prayer Service. Yes, it was different this year. However, seeing the children on video still made the day special. Please look for a link to the video on the school's Facebook page later this week.

Have a great night!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! We had a spooktacular day in first grade!

Before celebrating and partying, we did have some work to do. We had a beautiful prayer service in Religion class. The students created a pumpkin. Afterwards, we prayed a prayer asking Jesus to open our eyes to those around us, to help us not snub our noses and others, and to use our mouths to speak kind words. After our Math Meeting and Spelling test, it was time to party!

We began by reading Where's My Mummy. After reading the story we wrote about how our 'mummies' help us when we are scared. We added our writing to a craft.

We then played several minute-to-win-it games. The students had to build a tower using cups without it falling over, toss rings into a cup, and stack candy corn on a popsicle stick without any falling off. Finally, the students used candy corn and pumpkins to design a haunted house.

This afternoon we watched Hotel Transylvania

Here are some pictures from the day:

Thank you to everyone for a great day! Have fun trick-or-treating. Please remember to maintain social distance and wear a mask. Let's work together to keep everyone safe!

Rainy Day Learning!

Greetings! Happy Thursday! I hope everyone had a great day. We sure did in first grade. We did not let the rainy weather dampen our spirits.

In Religion class today we learned that Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. He taught them the Our Father. The students were amazed that this is the same prayer we pray today.

We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts today; tomorrow we will be having some Halloween fun in class. So, today, we used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read words with the digraphs th, sh, and ng and closed syllable words, and wrote sentences using our sight words. We partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets along with our story from yesterday. We also read a nonfiction piece about helping in our community and completed pages in our close reading companion. Finally, we took our weekly assessment and practiced writing proper nouns correctly.

In Math class today we took our chapter test on subtraction. Next week, we will begin our study of shapes.

For some Halloween fun today, we read Creepy Carrots. After reading the story, we talked about what we would do if creepy carrots were following us. The students came up with some very creative ideas. Here are some of them:

Because of the rain, we stayed in our classroom for Gym. We danced to some videos and played with our recess bags when we got tired.

We ended our day with Social Studies. Today our focused switched to geography as we learned about the continents and oceans. We created a map of the world, which is one of my favorite Social Studies projects. Have a look:

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Halloween celebration. The students are to wear their costumes to school. They must also wear their facemask. We will have a spooktacular time tomorrow!

Let's Carve a Pumpkin!

Today was a great day in first grade. It was one of those days that reminded me why I love teaching. The students were so engaged today and were applying their knowledge and skills all day. It was so great to see them excited about learning.

In Religion today we talked about how Jesus' Apostles came to believe that he was the Son of God. We read the story of Jesus calming the stormy water. We illustrated what the water looked like before and after Jesus calmed the water.

In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary. We then used our sound boxes to segment words into sounds. Following that, we read words with digraphs th, sh, and ng, and closed syllable words. We also practiced reading our sight words. Our focus then switched to reading. We partner read a story in our decodable readers. We also read Nell's Books from our literature anthologies. After reading that story we wrote and illustrated the characters, setting, and events. Finally, we practiced writing proper nouns.

In Math class today we reviewed everything we learned about subtraction. We are ready for our test tomorrow.

In Spanish class we reviewed the greeting phrases we learned last week by creating flash cards.

After working hard all day, it was time for pumpkin fun. Today we carved a pumpkin. Each student was given plastic gloves and helped get the seeds out of the pumpkin. We then worked together to design the face. As I carved the pumpkin, the students wrote the steps in how to carve a pumpkin. We added that to a craft. And here is our pumpkin . . .

Have a great night!
