Happy Thursday! This week is flying by. It was another great learning day in first.
In Religion class, we began our study of Baptism. We talked about how when we were baptized we became members of the church and a child of God.
During Language Arts class, we partner read our story and then reviewed the details from the story by drawing what each character did for Mama's surprise party. We then reviewed adjectives. To do this, we conducted an adjective taste test. We taste tested apples and then generated a list of adjectives to describe that apple. Next, we wrote the third detail sentence for our paragraph on why we love recess. Finally, we worked in literacy centers.
In Math class today, we learned how to add 10 to a number. We have been practicing counting by 10s from a number. We learned that adding 10 to a number is just like counting by 10s.
We ended our day by praying the Stations of the Cross.
Tomorrow will be an exciting day to end the week!

Time for a Fiesta!
Today was quite an exciting day in first grade. The excitement was building all day for our fiesta. The students worked really hard all day so that we could party at the end of the day.
In Religion class, we wrapped up our chapter on how Jesus celebrated God's love and gave us the sacraments. We will next be exploring the sacrament of Baptism.
During Language Arts class, we reviewed our sight words, comparative endings, and -dge words. We also choral read our story. As the students were reading, I listened in awe at how well they read; they are all becoming excellent readers. Next we wrote another detail sentence in our paragraph on why we love recess. Finally, we worked in our literacy centers.
For gym class today we gave our hearts a workout while doing Rockin' Aerobics. The students loved rocking to music while exercising. By the end of class, they were quite tired.
In Math class today, we practiced counting by 10 from any number. We learned a counting by 10 rap to help us. We will be saying this rap in class over the next few weeks as we practice counting by 10s.
During Social Studies class, we learned the difference between wants and needs. Needs are things we must have like food, clothing, and shelter. Wants are things we would like.
Finally, it was time for a fiesta. We began by breaking a pinata. Everyone had the chance to swing at the pinata. When it did break, sight words fell from it. Everyone received a word. They then had to read it and use it in a sentence. Next, we broke open the confetti eggs. Smiles and laughter could be heard coming from the room. Below is a picture of our pinata and what the floor looked like after breaking all of the eggs. It was quite a celebration!

Two in a Row
Today was another wonderful day in first grade. We were busy learning and having fun doing so.
In Religion class today we looked at each of the seven sacraments. We learned about Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.
During Language Arts class, we continued to practice reading long a: ai and ay words along with possessives and our sight words. Today we read our story Mama's birthday Present. The students are really enjoying this story and are looking forward to the fiesta tomorrow. In addition to all that, we worked in our literacy centers and wrote the first detail sentence in our paragraph on why we love recess.
We again read a Dr. Seuss book today. Even though we heard this story last week, we really enjoyed listening to Fox in Socks again today. It is such a tongue twister of a book. After reading, we talked about synonyms. We wrote a pair of synonyms on socks and then decorated them.
In Math class today, we practiced adding 10 to a number. We began by using our hundred number charts and pennies. For example, we put a penny on number 7, counted 10 from 7 and put a penny on 17. We continued doing this until we reached 97. After a while, we soon learned how to add 10 to a number.
Just a reminder that gym class is tomorrow.

Back to Normal?
Happy Monday! It felt so good to have a normal day of school. I will say that on my way to school today, it was snowing. I was glad to see that it did not last long. The sun came out and melted it away. I hope today is the beginning of some normalcy.
In Religion class today we learned that Jesus gave us the sacraments. We learned that the sacraments are a special sign of God's life and love, that there are seven sacraments, and that we celebrate the sacraments with our parish family.
We will be spending this week reading Mama's Birthday Present. It is a long story that tells of a boy planning a birthday party for his mama. It is a great story to illustrate Spanish birthday traditions. Today we listened to the story and briefly reviewed the plot. Tomorrow we will read the story. Before listening to the story, we reviewed long a: ai, ay, possessives, and our sight words.

An Odd Week
This has certainly been an odd week for school. Between delay starts, early dismissals, and closings, it was tough to find time for learning. I am really hoping that the worst is behind us. After all, we spring ahead this weekend.
We did have an awesome day of learning in first grade. I could tell that the students were eager to get back to school and learn.
In Language Arts class, we learned about possessives. We learned what they mean and how to read them in a story. We also practiced our sight words. In addition, we practiced finding adjectives in sentences and using adjectives in sentences. Just a reminder that the Spelling test in now on Monday.
During Math class today, we learned how to tell time to the half hour. We practiced writing time and showing it on clocks.
For Science class today, we talked about the 5 senses. We worked in centers to explore 4 of the 5 senses. In the sight center, students were shown a plate of 6 objects, given 7 seconds to look at it, and then drew the objects. For the hearing center, students shook eggs filled with objects and guessed what was inside each one. For the touch center, students felt objects in bags and wrote what they thought was in each bag. And for the smell station, students smelled 3 liquids and identified what each one was.
Finally, it was time for Art class. We switched our focus this week to St. Patrick's Day. We made a rainbow coming out of a pot of gold. They look awesome:

Lots of Learning in So Little Time
Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had a nice day and made it to and from work safely. We had a busy, productive day in first grade considering we had an early dismissal.
In Religion class, we talked about how we celebrate God's love. We learned that when we go to Mass and pray and sing with everyone we are worshiping God.
In Language Arts class, we blended and read long a: ai, ay words. We also talked about how we draw conclusions when we read. In addition we learned about adjectives and how they describe a noun.
Just a reminder that because of Stations of the Cross tomorrow, we will not have Gym class.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Today was Dr. Seuss' birthday. I love celebrating his life with the students and reading his books. Unfortunately, we were not able to read all of the books that I had wanted to today; my hope is to share his stories with the students throughout the month of March.
In Religion class today we talked about how Jesus celebrated God's love by praying with others. We recited a psalm that Jesus would have prayed with his family and friends.
In Math class today we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Each student was then given a cup of colored goldfish crackers. Students graphed the crackers and analyzed their data. We then figured out which color we had the most of. Yellow won by a landslide. Here is a picture of one graph:
This afternoon we attended a presentation by author Paul Orshoski. He read several poems that he had written and encouraged the students to write about what they know. Thank you to the Home and School Association for bringing him to Holy Name.
After the presentation, we read There's a Wocket in My Pocket. The students loved all of the silly names in this book. Afterwards, students had a chance to design their own wockets in pockets.
