Goodbye September!

Greetings! What a beautiful day it was today! While we were completing our Spelling page, the one sentence talked about snowmen. It is hard to think about snowmen on a day like today.

We began our day by attending Adoration. We then came back to the classroom and prayed the second decade of the Joyful Mysteries.

We learned to blend and read initial blend words today in Language Arts. We also practiced our sight words. In addition we talked about telling sentences. Finally, we worked in our literacy centers.

In Math class we discussed ordinal position to the sixth. The students loved using linking cubes to help do this.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Gym class!

Real or Fantasy!

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! By the sounds of it, the students enjoyed their time off. I heard many stories about PotatoFest!

We began our day by learning about the rosary including the prayers we say when we pray the rosary. Then, each student was given their very own rosary. Together we prayed the first decade of the Joyful Mysteries. During the month of October we will continue to pray a decade of the rosary each day.

During Language Arts class, we blended and read short e words. We also talked about the difference between realistic and fantasy stories. Each student was given a short scenario and had to decide if it was real or fantasy. Here s how it turned out:

We then talked about telling sentences including that their job is to tell us something. Finally, we made small mosaic apples and wrote sentences about them. Here are two examples:

In Math class we used linking cubes to help us draw and write addition number sentences.

As you can see, it was a busy day in first grade. I'm sure the students will sleep good tonight!

From Apples to Applesauce

Happy Thursday! Today was a super fun day in first grade. We celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday (which is actually tomorrow) by making applesauce. We joined with the other first grade class to do this. We read about Johnny Appleseed and then helped add the apples, sugars, and water to the slow cooker. We had to wait all day for it to cook, but it was worth the wait. We all agreed it was yummy in our tummies. Here is our applesauce:

As much fun as we had making and tasting applesauce, we also had fun learning in the classroom. In Religion class, we talked about how Jesus grew up in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph.

Language Arts class was full of learning. We reviewed our sight words, inflected endings, short o and -s plural words. We partner read our story, discussed the main idea of the story, and took a test on it. Finally, we reviewed word order in sentences.

In Math class, we practiced solving a problem by making an organized list.

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow. Have a great weekend. See you on Monday.

First Day of Fall

Happy Wednesday! Today was another day full of excitement and learning in first grade.

In Religion class today, we talked about the Christmas story. We are learning about the Holy Family and about Jesus as a young boy before he began his public ministry. Our focus today was Jesus' birth in Bethlehem.

During Language Arts class we reviewed inflected endings. We also practiced our sight words. Then we read A Fox and A Kit. The students loved learning about foxes. There are many animal lovers among us! Finally, we ended class by reviewing word order in sentences. Students worked in groups to unscramble sentences. They did a great job with it.

In Math class today we practiced counting to 23 using a wrap-up. We will be using wrap-ups throughout the year in math as we learn our Math facts. Students did a great job using them today!

For gym today, we took advantage of the beautiful fall weather and headed outside. It was such a pleasant day. It was hard to come back inside.

In Social Studies class today, we discussed why people move to new places.

Throughout the week, we have been studying apples. Yesterday we talked about the life cycle of an apple and today we made a diagram of an apple. Here is a picture:

Tomorrow has many surprises in store as we celebrate Johnny Appleseed!

Learning a Lot

Happy Tuesday! I hope all is well with everyone!

We began our Tuesday by attending Mass for 40 hours. Msgr. Lockard talked to the students about ways we can pray when we attend Adoration including saying prayers taught to us, praying for others, and thanking God for all that we had. When we returned to Adoration this afternoon, students were encouraged to do all three.

In Language Arts class, we learned how to blend and read words with inflected endings -ing. We also practiced our sight words and reviewed the importance of word order in sentences. We even had time to work in literacy centers.

During Math class today, we used the seeds from our apples to make a pictograph. Students worked with a partner to count and draw their seeds in their apples. We then took their pictures and created the graph. We then talked about the graph. Here is our graph:

As one student said as we were getting packed up, "We sure had a busy day and learned lots Miss Chalich. " I agreed with her. Today was a great learning day in first grade!

Busy Monday

Greetings! I hope everyone had a great, relaxing weekend and a wonderful start to another week. We had one busy day in first grade.

This week, Holy Name is celebrating 40 Hours of Eucharistic Devotion. We began our day by attending Adoration and spending some quiet time with Jesus. Tomorrow we will be going to Mass in the morning and Adoration in the afternoon.

In Language Arts class today we blended and read words with the inflected ending -s. We learned to read the base word, read the ending, and put it together to read the word. We also talked about the main idea of a story. In addition, we learned the importance of word order in sentences. Finally, we spent time working in our literacy centers.

During Math class today, we talked about dividing an object in half. I cut apples in half and gave each student a half of an apple. We talked about how two halves make a whole. Finally, students dug seeds from their apples. We will be using the seeds tomorrow in class.

Have a great night!

Fireworks in First Grade!

Happy Friday! Today was a busy and fabulous Friday in first grade!

We began our day by attending Mass. After Mass, we went to our Peacekeeper Assembly. The program focused around the song "Fireworks" by Katy Perry. Students were told to let their light shine for others and be peacemakers in the world. To conclude, everyone was given a glow stick to wave during the playing of the song.

Back in the classroom, we reviewed concepts we learned this week in Language Arts including short o and -s plural words and the action part of sentences. We also took a test on our story. To help review short o words, students wrote short o words on a circle. We then transformed that circle into a lollipop. Look at how cool they turned out:

In Math class today, we practiced sorting. We sorted ourselves in two groups and identified the sorting rule.

During Science class today, we learned about insects including the names of their three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen) and how many legs they have. Working in groups, students used Play-doh to make a model of an insect. Here is how that turned out:

Finally in Art class, we made mosaic apples. Students cut red construction paper into pieces to cover an apple. We added worms too. They turned out great!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Saying Yes!

Greetings! Today was a great day in first grade!

In Religion class, we read the story about Mary saying yes to God. We listened to the story and then acted it out with a partner. We learned today that we should always say yes to God. Also in Religion, we finished our peacemaker lessons by talking about tattling and telling. Our goal is to tell when someone is getting hurt and not to tattle on others. At the end of class, we all promised to be peacemakers!

During Language Arts, we reviewed our sight words and short i and final x words. We partner read our story and discussed its plot by drawing what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. We also reviewed identifying the action part of a sentence. Finally, we spent time working in our literacy centers.

In Math class, we practiced identifying numbers between two numbers.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. We have Mass, the Peacekeeper Assembly, Library, and Art! Sleep well!

Safety First

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope everyone is having a great week. We had an exciting day in first grade.

Our day began with the Officer Phil program. We learned many valuable lessons about safety including what to do when strangers approach, why we should be buddies and not bullies, and what rules to follow on the Internet. Everyone was given a coloring book with these safety rules.

Back in the classroom, we prepared to read our story The Big Blue Ox. We reviewed short o and -s plural words as well as our sight words. Then it was time to read the story. We enjoyed it but not as much as last week's. Hopefully, you enjoyed it tonight too.

In Math class today, we learned how to count pennies. This was super easy since everyone remembers doing this in kindergarten.

For gym class today, we again enjoyed our time outside. It was such a pleasant day to play and exercise with friends.

Finally, for Social Studies, we talked about community helpers. Given clues, students had to identify the various helpers in our neighborhoods. Students then picked a community helper and wrote a sentence telling how they help us.

More than One

Happy Tuesday! We had a busy day in first grade today. We began the day with Religion class. Today we reviewed concepts we have been talking about: the Blessed Trinity, prayer, and the Sign of the Cross. We also talked about giving build-ups during our peacekeeper lesson. We practiced giving a friend a build-up and enjoyed hearing nice things about ourselves.

In Language Arts class today, we learned about plurals and practiced reading plural words and sorting words based on whether or not they named one or more than one. Here is how our chart turned out:

We also practiced reading our sight words and worked on finding action parts in a sentence. Finally, we worked in our literacy centers today.

During Math class, we practiced drawing pictures for some, some more and some, some went away stories. We used linking cubes to help us act out the story before drawing a picture.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is gym day. Also, book orders are due tomorrow. Have a great night!

Marvelous Monday

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing weekend. By the sounds from the students today, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

We had a marvelous Monday in first grade. In Religion class today we practiced making the Sign of the Cross. We also continued our discussion on being peacemakers. Today we talked about different feelings we experience. We focused on what to do when someone makes us mad. We learned to take a deep breath and slowly let it out; this will help us calm down and act in a peaceful way.

We learned how to blend, read, and spell short o words during Language Arts class today. We also talked about characters and setting of a story. Finally we discussed the action part in a sentence.

In Math class today, we used geoboards to make shapes, mainly triangles. We also practiced identifying the inside and outside of a shape.

Have a great night!

What a Difference

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a fantastic week. I was thinking today about what a difference a week makes. Last week, it was hot and muggy; today it was cool and comfortable. It is amazing all of the different weather we experience.

Today was a great way to wrap up the week. In Religion class today, we began talking about being peacemakers. We talked about what bullies do and why bullying hurts others. We ended class by agreeing to be peacemakers and made a necklace stating that we are peacemakers.

Language Arts today was a review of the week. We reviewed short i and final x as well as our sight words. We took a test on the story and wrapped up our study of the naming part in a sentence. Finally, for writing, we wrote a sentence about what real pigs do. We turned it into a little craft project. Here are some examples:

We also visited the library for the first time this year. We were reminded of how to take care of books and were showed how to find books. Everyone took a book home tonight to read over the week. Please return all library books to school by next Friday.

During Math class today, we talked about attributes of triangles. We also sorted shapes by different characteristics.

In Science class today, we talked about the different covering animals have. We used magnifying glasses to study some feathers.

Finally for Art, we made fall trees. Students traced their arm and hand which became the trunk of the tree. Using Q-tips and paint, students added leaves to their picture. The paintings turned out beautiful!

Have a great weekend!

September 11

Greetings, friends! Happy Thursday! It was another amazing day of learning in first grade!

In Religion class today, we talked about the Blessed Trinity. We learned that there are 3 Persons in 1. To help us remember this, we created a triangle ornament. On each side, the students wrote a name of one of the Persons. This is always one of my favorite projects to do with the students in Religion. Here is a look at the final product:

In Language Arts class today we reviewed skills we have been working on. We reviewed our sight words, short a, and final ck. We also reviewed the naming part of a sentence. To help with fluency, we partner read Pig in a Wig and discuss realism and fantasy. We then worked in literacy centers.

During Math class today, we acted out some, some more and some, some went away stories. Soon we will be learning to draw pictures and write number sentences that correlate to these stories.

I end tonight remembering 9-11. Last year I was able to visit the memorial in New York. It was absolutely breath-taking. I am posting a picture that I took from the memorial. God Bless America!

Success at Learning

Today was a very successful learning day in first grade. We worked very hard and we quite tired by the end of the day.

In Religion class today we learned about God's greatest gift to us. We even learned a special song to help us remember that Jesus is God's greatest gift to us.

Language Arts class was full of laughter today. We reviewed short i and final x by singing a poem. The students loved singing about how the thin birds got fatter by eating. The laughter continued as we read Pig in a Wig. They giggled at the pig as he ate. I personally love the last line in the story. I hope you enjoyed hearing the story tonight.

During Math class today, we talked about things we do in the morning and afternoon. We also learned about ordinal position and practiced identifying objects in first, second, and third place.

Gym class was quite enjoyable today. We took advantage of the weather again and played outside. I am hoping this pleasant weather stays around for a bit longer.

Finally, in Social Studies class today we talked about rules and why we have them. We learned that rules help keep us safe.

Busy Day!

Today was a busy day in first grade. We began our day by attending Eucharistic Adoration. Spending quiet time with Jesus was a great way for us to start our day.

Next, it was off to the Magazine Kick-Off Assembly. There we were able to see all of the cool prizes we can get by selling magazines. As a school, if we $16,000 worth of magazines then we will have a special program come to the school. We all agreed to try to sell magazines to help our school.

Back in the classroom, it was time for Language Arts. Today we learned how to blend and read words that end in x. We also practiced our sight words and continued to practice finding the naming parts in a sentence.

In Math class today, we practiced solving problems by using logical reasoning.

Before we knew it, it was time to go home. Remember that tomorrow is gym day!

Sunshine and Learning!

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has enjoyed their week and is looking forward to a great weekend! It was another warm day in school, but, just like yesterday, we did not let that stop us from learning.

We began our day by attending Mass. This was our first Mass of the year and the students did a great job listening and praying. Msgr. Lockard reminded us to never give up when things get hard.

Back in the classroom, we wrapped up our story Sam, Come Back. We reviewed short a, final ck, and our sight words. We took a test on the story too. In addition we reviewed characteristics about sentences like how they always begin with a capital letter and end with a period. Finally, we took a very first Spelling test. The students were quite excited about it.

In Math class today we created bar graphs. Students rolled a die and then colored a square on a graph to show what number they rolled. Here are some of the graphs.

During Science class today, students learned about how different animals move. Working in groups, students selected a card with an animal on it. They then had to act out how the animal moves while the others guessed what animal it was.

We ended our week in Art class. This week we made owls. Students tore up paper to make it look like the owls have feathers. They were very creative with this. Here are some pictures of the finished products:

Have a great weekend!

Learning in Warm Weather

Hello! I hope you had a nice day and were able to stay cool. Towards the end of the day I was asking the students to use their Spelling words in a sentence. For the word am, one student said 'I am hot.' Hopefully after tomorrow, things will cool off.

We did not let the warm weather deter us from learning. We wrapped up our Religion chapter on creation. The students did a fantastic job drawing 5 things God created.

In Language Arts today, we did some reviewing and practicing. We reviewed the consonants by playing a game called Uh-Oh. The students worked in groups for this game. Students selected a letter card from a bag and then had to give its name, sound, and a word beginning with the letter. If a student picked an Uh-Oh card, they had to place all of their cards back in the bag. The students really enjoyed this activity. We also spent time building our fluency and comprehension skills. Students partner-read the story Sam, Come Back. We then reviewed details from the story.

During Math class today we reviewed and practiced writing the digits 0, 6, 8, and 9.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day. We have our Opening School Mass at 9am. We also have Science and Art class tomorrow.

As promised, here is the picture of the pictograph we made in Math class yesterday:

Open House Night!

Greetings! Happy Wednesday! We had a great day in first grade. Many are excited to show you the room tonight during Open House!

In Religion class today we talked about how God always loves us. We read the story Guess How Much I Love You as a reminder of how big God's love is for us.

During Language Arts class, we began by preparing to read our very first story of the year. We reviewed short a, final ck, and our sight words. We then read Sam, Come Back. The students enjoyed this funny story. I hope you enjoyed having them read it to you tonight.

In Math class today, we made a pictograph of how we come to school (I'll post a picture of it tomorrow). We also practiced showing left and right. To end class, we danced to the Hokey Pokey as a way to practice left and right.

For Gym class today we went outside and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine. The sky was such a pretty blue this afternoon. It was hard to come inside. In Social Studies today we talked about the importance of respecting others in the classroom.

Just a reminder that we will be visiting the Book Fair tomorrow. Please send any money in a marked envelope or pouch.

Week 2

Greetings! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend, and you were able to enjoy some festivities among the rain showers. The students were so excited to tell me what they did over the weekend. I love hearing their stories!

Week 2 is off to a great start. In Religion class today we talked about how God made each one of us special.

During Language Arts class, we reviewed short a and final -ck by creating an -ack sack. Students did a great job generating a list of -ack words. We learned our new sight words today and practiced using them in a sentence. We also worked in literacy centers. Each week students will rotate between centers to build skills in phonics, writing, and sight word recognition. Finally, we reviewed sentences and practiced identifying complete sentences.

In Math class, we learned about circles and squares. This was mainly a review as everyone knew characteristics about circles and squares.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Gym class and students can wear sneakers to school. Tomorrow night is also Open House. This begins at 6:30 in the cafeteria. The Book Fair will also be open tomorrow night in case you wish to shop then!

Enjoy your night!
