Celebrating Presidents!

Greetings! Happy Friday! It was such a great day of learning in first grade today. I am hoping that next week we can have a string of these days with no interruptions!

We began our day with Religion class. Today we talked about how we join together with our parish to worship God. That means that we praise him and thank him.

We then took a break from our classroom learning to head to the gym. There we were able to enter the giant Earth balloon. We learned about the continents and oceans. The students loved getting inside the balloon!

Once we left the gym, we headed back to our classroom to continue our learning. The rest of the morning was spent in Language Arts. We used our letter tiles to spell and read long o words. We then learned to read open syllable words and identify the open syllable in each word. Following that we used our sight words and vocabulary words in sentences. Next we reread Go Wild and wrote the main idea and details from the story. Finally, we practiced using go, went, do, and did in sentences.

In Math class today we continued our study of graphs. We used our thinking skills to answer questions using both picture graphs and bar graphs.

In Science class we learned about the different food groups. Each student was given a picture of a food and had to identify which group it belongs to: fruit, vegetable, grains, proteins, or dairy.

We then wrapped up our Social Studies project from yesterday. We added a portrait of George Washington to our writing. Here is a finished piece:

Finally, it was time for Art class. To get us ready to celebrate Read Across America next week, we made Cat in the Hats. They are adorable! I can't wait to hang them up for all to see!

Just a reminder that Read Across America Week begins on Monday. The students can dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character or character from a book. Have a great weekend!
