Happy Valentine's Day!

Greetings! Love was sure in the air today in first grade. The students were quite excited to share their Valentines with their friends. I love seeing and hearing all of the kindness today! But before we could celebrate, we had some work to do.

We began our day with Religion class. Today we created a picture for the bishop. We wrote "Open my Heart to Hear the Call of God" and illustrated a picture that went with the theme.

We wrapped up another week in Language Arts today. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read long e words, and defined and read words with prefixes. Next we wrote sentences using our sight words and practiced using context clues to find the meaning of a word in a sentence. Then our focus switched to reading. We partner read a story in our decodable reader booklet. We also read a short nonfiction piece about bees and completed pages in our close reading companion. We ended class by taking our weekly assessment and using has and have in sentences.

Our Gym class was Valentine's Day themed today. The students walked/ran around a circle of hearts. When they stopped, they performed the exercise on the heart. The exercises ranged from jumping jacks, sit ups, push up, to the floss. They had a blast.

In Math class today we again practiced answering questions using data on a picture graph. We are really good at this.

Then it was time to celebrate. Each student was given a box of candy hearts. They had to graph the hearts and then answer questions about their graphs. Here is one graph:

Next, it was time to pass out the Valentines. The students did a great job at passing them out. They even had a better time exploring all of the goodies. The bags were quite full!

Have a fantastic weekend! I'll see you on Tuesday!
