To add three single digit numbers, we first pick two numbers, circle them, and add them together. Next we take that answer and add the remaining single digit. We will be practicing this skill during the last month of school.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day in school.

What a Beautiful Day!

Today was such a beautiful day. After the long, cold winter we had, we so appreciated the warm, sunny weather. It was so hard to come inside from recess today. I hope you were able to soak in some sun to start your week.

In Religion class today, we talked about choices. We learned that when we make choices we need to remember and ask ourselves "What Would Jesus Do?" We know it is not always easy to make loving choices, so we need to pray to God for help in making good choices.

During Language Arts class, we blended and read words with suffixes -ful and -ly. We are really good at reading words with endings; we will be working on using these words in sentences all week. We also talked about finding cause and effect examples in stories. Finally, we learned about adjectives that compare. When we compare to things, we put -er on the adjective; when we compare three or more things, we put -est on the adjective.

Measuring in Feet

Greetings! Today was such a great day of learning in first grade! We began our day by attending Eucharistic Adoration. I say this all the time, but it is so true. It is always nice to spend some quiet time with Jesus to start the day.

When we came back, we jumped into Language Arts. We learned how to blend and read words with the vowels ew, ue, and ui. The students loved saying this vowel sound day. Next we practiced our sight words. We then worked in literacy centers. This afternoon, we practiced using adjectives for how many in sentences. Students were given a die cube. They rolled the die and wrote a sentence for a number of objects. For example, if they rolled a three, they would write 'I have three cookies.' Finally, we wrote the topic sentence for our informative paragraph on koalas.

In Math class today we learned how to measure in feet. We first measured the width of the classroom using our feet by going heel to toe across the room. We learned that this wasn't the best way since each one of us has different size feet. This led us to learning about the standard foot size which is a ruler. We then used rulers to measure the width of the classroom.

Just a reminder that we will have gym class tomorrow.

A Special Visitor!

Today was quite an exciting day in first grade. When the students walked in, there eyes got huge as they saw that the Easter Bunny had visited the classroom. It did not take them long to tear through the basket on their desk. That was such a precious moment. Here are some pictures of the baskets:

After settling down, it was time to get to work. With today being Holy Thursday, we talked about what Jesus did at the Last Supper. We learned that he washed his disciples feet which shows us that we need to serve others. We also talked about the meal of bread and wine that he shared with his friends. Then, we took turns washing each others' hands as a way to help us remember to serve and help others just like Jesus did.

In Language Arts class, we wrapped up our story The Lady in the Moon. We reviewed long i: ie, igh, silent letters kn and wr, long o: oa, ow, three letter blends, and our sight words. We then worked on our fluency by partner reading the story. Finally, we reviewed adjectives for what kind by locating them in sentences.

Our Math lesson was an Easter themed lesson. We used jelly beans to measure different objects: a crayon, pipe cleaner, block, book, and pencil.

We ended the day by watching Big Hero 6 since we reached our Lenten goal to help Haiti.

Just a reminder that we have school on Monday. I hope everyone has a blessed and happy Easter!

April First

It is so hard to believe that tomorrow is the last day of the school week. This week has just flown right by.

In Religion class today, we continued our talk about the Three Days. We reviewed what we learned yesterday about each day and created a poster to help us remember these holy days.

During Language Arts class, we reviewed long i: ie, igh, silent letters kn and wr, and our sight words. We then read our story Lady in the Moon about the Moon Festival. We learned all about what people do and eat during this special celebration. Next, we reviewed adjectives for what kind by locating them in sentences. Finally, we took our writing from yesterday and added it to a bunny craft. They are hanging in the hallway for all to read and enjoy.

In Math class today, we practiced the new facts we learned yesterday: subtracting a number from 10. We used a wrap-up to help us practice.

First grade did not attend Living Stations today due to concerns it might be too much for them. Instead, we reviewed the Stations in class and watched The Proud Tree. This movie tells the story of a proud, boastful tree who eventually becomes the cross on which Jesus dies on. It is such a great movie to show the Easter story.

We ended our day with Social Studies. We talked about why people work and where people work. We focused today on factories. We watched two short films about factories.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a jean day!
