Celebrating the Olympics!

Greetings! Today was an exciting day in first grade. There was no doubt that gym class was the highlight. The students came in so pumped up for it, but first we had learning to do.

We began our day with Religion class. Today we finished our discussion on Lent. We wrote a prayer that we can pray during Lent and talked about how we can help others by participating in our Penny Wars.

In Language Arts, we learned our new sight words and vocabulary words. We practiced reading long o words, our sight words, and vocabulary words as we read Go Wild, a nonfiction story about how animals survive in the wild. After that we talked about when to use go, do, went, and did in sentences. We ended the morning by working in our literacy centers.

After lunch and recess, it was finally time for Gym class. Today we held our very own Winter Olympics. We began by having the students take an Olympic oath pledging to try their best and not worry about winning but having fun. Then it was time for the games. The students participated in speed skating, figure skating, bobsledding, mogul skiing, and hockey. As our games came to a close, the students received a gold medal and stood for the playing of our national anthem. Today's class was truly a memorable event.

Back in the classroom, we wrote about our favorite event and added it to an Olympic person. Here are pictures of the gold medals as well as the writing project:

It did take us a little time to refocus, but we did continue on our learning with Math class. Today we used our thinking caps to solve problems.

We ended the day with Social Studies. Today we talked about Abraham Lincoln. We especially focused how he kept important papers in his hat. The students wrote about what they would keep in their hat.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! See you on Tuesday!
