Learning New Skills

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone's week is going well. We had quite a busy day in first grade.

In Religion class, we began studying the Three Days: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. We talked about the events of each day and how each are important. We will continue our discussion tomorrow.

During Language Arts class, we learned about the silent letter kn and wr. The students did great blending and reading these words. We also practiced reading our sight words. In addition, we located adjectives for what kind in sentences. For writing today, we wrote about bunnies. We wrote about what bunnies can do, what they have, and what they are like. Finally, we worked in literacy centers.

In Math class today, we learned new subtraction facts: the subtracting a number from 10 facts. We used pennies to help us find these answers. We will continue to practice them tomorrow.

Just a reminder that we will not have gym class tomorrow. Enjoy the night!

The Start of Holy Week

Happy Monday! This week begins the most important week of the year for Catholics: Holy Week. I hope this week is filled with blessings as we approach Easter.

In Religion class this week we will be looking at Holy Week. Today we focused on Palm Sunday. We read the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem and how the people greeted him by waving palm branches and laying cloaks on the ground. We made a palm branch using pieces of green construction paper.

During Language Arts class, we blended and read long i: ie, igh words. We used our letter tiles to spell words and then generated words in the -igh, -ight, and -ies word families. The students came up with so many words; I was so proud of them. We also talked about the difference between realism and fantasy. Finally, we learned adjectives for what kind.

In Math class today we ordered events by time. We learned that writing our name is quicker than drawing a clockface or putting linking cubes into ten sticks.

As promised here are some examples of the Easter eggs the students made on Friday:

Have a great night!

Fossil Fun!

Happy Friday! I hope you had a good week. This week was full of excitement and tons of learning in first grade.

We began our day with Mass. The students were singing so beautifully today. It was something special to hear.

In Language Arts class, we wrapped up our story. We reviewed our sight words, long o: oa, and three letter blends. We then took a test on our story. Next, we reviewed adjectives for size by locating them in sentences.

This week we have been learning all about fossils and dinosaurs in Language Arts. To wrap up everything, we made fossils using clay. Students pressed a seashell into a piece of clay. I will be baking the clay over the weekend so that this fossil can be a treasure for years to come.

During Math class, we practiced solving a problem by making an organized list. In Science class, we studied the different things that give off heat. Some of the things we identified include ovens, lamps, fire, and the sun.

Finally, it was time for Art class. We made Easter eggs using marshmallows. I'll post pictures of them on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

More Dinosaur Fun!

Hello! Today was quite a busy day in first grade. I am always amazed at how quickly the time flies.

We built on what we learned in Religion class yesterday. Yesterday we talked about how Jesus is the Light of the World. Today, we talked about how we can be light for others.

In Language Arts class we reviewed long e: ea and inflected endings (when a y is changed to an i). We also reviewed our sight words by going on a fossil hunt. I hid bones with sight words on them around the room. Students had to find a bone; once everyone had a bone, students took turns using their word in a sentence. In addition to reviewing, we practiced building our fluency and comprehension skills. We worked in literacy centers and partner read our story. We then illustrated the steps in a dinosaur dig before writing the steps. Finally, we reviewed adjectives for size.

During Math class today, we learned how to count nickels and pennies. The students did very good with this skill.

For a special treat today we met with our 6th grade buddies. Working together they created stained glass crosses. They turned out awesome. I hope you like them!

Have a great night!

Dinosaur Dig!

Happy Wednesday! This week is just flying by like last week. We had another great day in first grade.

In Religion class today, we talked about what it means when we say that Jesus is the Light of the World. To us, it means that Jesus is there to guide and help us just like light from the sun or from a flashlight helps and guides us.

During Language Arts class we read Mister Bones: Dinosaur Hunter. The students loved this story about Barnum Brown. They were so excited to learn about how he found T. Rex bones in Montana. Before reading the story, we practiced and reviewed reading long o: oa, ow words and three letter blend words along with our sight words.

For an extension activity today, students participated in a simulated dinosaur dig. Each table was given a container filled with sand. In that sand were pieces of a picture of a dinosaur. Using tweezers, students had to find and carefully remove the pieces. Once all the pieces were found, they had to put the pieces together to make the picture. They loved this activity.

During Math class today, we learned how to count nickels. We learned that to count nickels we count by 5's. Tomorrow we will be counting nickels and pennies.

For Social Studies class today, we learned three new words: buy, save, and trade. We talked about each one and learned the difference between them.

Today in Religion class we wrapped up our study about Baptism. We reviewed what happens during a Baptism including what is said and what is received.

During Language Arts class today, we blended and read three letter blend words. The students found these words quite easy since we are used to reading two letter blends. We also practiced our sight words before working in our literacy centers. Finally, we reviewed adjectives for size by locating them in phrases and then using them in sentences.

Our story this week is centered around dinosaurs and fossils. As a little extension activity, we learned about how fossils are formed. This will aid us when we read the story tomorrow.

In Math class today, we used rulers to measure line segments to the nearest inch. We also used them to draw line segments of various lengths.

Just a reminder that because of Stations tomorrow we will not have gym class.

In Religion class today, we continued our talk about Baptism. We talked about why we wear white (to remind us to be a follower of Jesus) and how we receive a candle which means that we are called to share the Light of Christ. It is so exciting each morning to see the students' excitement as we talk about Baptism.

In Language Arts class today, we began a new story and thus we learned new phonics skills. Today we blended and read long o: oa, ow words. We also talked about the author's purpose for writing a story. Finally, we talked about adjectives for size.

We finished up our celebration of Dr. Seuss today. We read The Sleep Book. We then wrote about a dream we had and added ourselves sleeping. Here's a picture:

In Math class today, we used paper clips to measure line segments. We used both large and small ones. Next week, we will be using rulers to measure line segments.

During Science class today we talked about light and shadows. We learned that a shadow is made when something blocks light. Students were put into groups and given a flashlight. They had to pick an object in the room, shine a light on it, and draw the object's shadow. They loved this.

Finally, it was time for Art class. It was a sticky art class today. We made Easter bunnies using cotton balls. They are so adorable!

As promised, here is a picture of a some of the dot pictures the students' made yesterday. They all were so creative with their work:

An Unusual Day!

Happy Thursday! Today was a bit of an unusual day in first grade. Both first grades spent the day together. Things went very well and we accomplished a lot.

In Religion class, we talked about what happens at a Baptism. We learned that before one is baptized, the parents and godparents trace the sign of the cross on the baby's forehead. When the baby is baptized, the priest pours water over the baby's head and says special words. After learning all this, we role played a Baptism using a baby doll.

During Language Arts, we reviewed our sight words, long a: ai, ay words and possessives. We then worked on our fluency skills by partnering reading the story and then buiult our comprehension skills by talking about how Vashti changes throughout the story. Next we worked in literacy centers. Finally, we reviewed adjectives for color and shape by identifying them in sentences.

For Math class today, we practiced the facts with a sum of 10. First we played a guessing game. Students worked in partners. They divided 10 pennies between both hands and showed one hand to their partner. The partner had to guess how many were in the other hand. We then practiced these facts using a wrap-up.

To end the day, we created pictures using dots. Students used paint and Q-tips to make a picture just like the character in our story did. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

As crazy as today was, it was very fun and successful. The students were fantastic listeners and worked will with everyone. I am so proud of them!

During Social Studies class, we learned the difference between wants and needs. Needs are things we must have like food, clothing, and shelter. Wants are things we would like.

Finally, it was time for a fiesta. We began by breaking a pinata. Everyone had the chance to swing at the pinata. When it did break, sight words fell from it. Everyone received a word. They then had to read it and use it in a sentence. Next, we broke open the confetti eggs. Smiles and laughter could be heard coming from the room. Below is a picture of our pinata and what the floor looked like after breaking all of the eggs. It was quite a celebration!

Two in a Row

Today was another wonderful day in first grade. We were busy learning and having fun doing so.

In Religion class today we looked at each of the seven sacraments. We learned about Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.

During Language Arts class, we continued to practice reading long a: ai and ay words along with possessives and our sight words. Today we read our story Mama's birthday Present. Back to Normal?

Happy Monday! It felt so good to have a normal day of school. I will say that on my way to school today, it was snowing. I was glad to see that it did not last long. The sun came out and melted it away. I hope today is the beginning of some normalcy.

In Religion class today we learned that Jesus gave us the sacraments. We learned that the sacraments are a special sign of God's life and love, that there are seven sacraments, and that we celebrate the sacraments with our parish family.

We will be spending this week reading Mama's Birthday Present. It is a long story that tells of a boy planning a birthday party for his mama. It is a great story to illustrate Spanish birthday traditions. Today we listened to the story and briefly reviewed the plot. Tomorrow we will read the story. Before listening to the story, we reviewed long a: ai, ay, possessives, and our sight words.

Also in Language Arts class today, we worked in literacy centers. We also wrote the topic sentence for our paragraph on why we love recess. In addition, we continued our celebration of Dr. Seuss. An Odd Week

This has certainly been an odd week for school. Between delay starts, early dismissals, and closings, it was tough to find time for learning. I am really hoping that the worst is behind us. After all, we spring ahead this weekend.

We did have an awesome day of learning in first grade. I could tell that the students were eager to get back to school and learn.

In Language Arts class, we learned about possessives. We learned what they mean and how to read them in a story. We also practiced our sight words. In addition, we practiced finding adjectives in sentences and using adjectives in sentences. Just a reminder that the Spelling test in now on Monday.

During Math class today, we learned how to tell time to the half hour. We practiced writing time and showing it on clocks.

For Science class today, we talked about the 5 senses. We worked in centers to explore 4 of the 5 senses. In the sight center, students were shown a plate of 6 objects, given 7 seconds to look at it, and then drew the objects. For the hearing center, students shook eggs filled with objects and guessed what was inside each one. For the touch center, students felt objects in bags and wrote what they thought was in each bag. And for the smell station, students smelled 3 liquids and identified what each one was.

Finally, it was time for Art class. We switched our focus this week to St. Patrick's Day. We made a rainbow coming out of a pot of gold. They look awesome:

Have a great weekend. Hopefully, next week will be less disruptive.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Today was Dr. Seuss' birthday. I love celebrating his life with the students and reading his books. Unfortunately, we were not able to read all of the books that I had wanted to today; my hope is to share his stories with the students throughout the month of March.

In Religion class today we talked about how Jesus celebrated God's love by praying with others. We recited a psalm that Jesus would have prayed with his family and friends.

In Math class today we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Each student was then given a cup of colored goldfish crackers. Students graphed the crackers and analyzed their data. We then figured out which color we had the most of. Yellow won by a landslide. Here is a picture of one graph:

This afternoon we attended a presentation by author Paul Orshoski. He read several poems that he had written and encouraged the students to write about what they know. Thank you to the Home and School Association for bringing him to Holy Name.

After the presentation, we read There's a Wocket in My Pocket. The students loved all of the silly names in this book. Afterwards, students had a chance to design their own wockets in pockets.

Here is a picture of the Cat in the Hats we made last Friday:
