An Unusual Day!

Happy Thursday! Today was a bit of an unusual day in first grade. Both first grades spent the day together. Things went very well and we accomplished a lot.

In Religion class, we talked about what happens at a Baptism. We learned that before one is baptized, the parents and godparents trace the sign of the cross on the baby's forehead. When the baby is baptized, the priest pours water over the baby's head and says special words. After learning all this, we role played a Baptism using a baby doll.

During Language Arts, we reviewed our sight words, long a: ai, ay words and possessives. We then worked on our fluency skills by partnering reading the story and then buiult our comprehension skills by talking about how Vashti changes throughout the story. Next we worked in literacy centers. Finally, we reviewed adjectives for color and shape by identifying them in sentences.

For Math class today, we practiced the facts with a sum of 10. First we played a guessing game. Students worked in partners. They divided 10 pennies between both hands and showed one hand to their partner. The partner had to guess how many were in the other hand. We then practiced these facts using a wrap-up.

To end the day, we created pictures using dots. Students used paint and Q-tips to make a picture just like the character in our story did. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

As crazy as today was, it was very fun and successful. The students were fantastic listeners and worked will with everyone. I am so proud of them!
