Greetings! Today was another exciting day in first grade! The students were so happy all day; I just loved all of their excitement!
In Religion class today we read the story of the Forgiving Father (also known as the Prodigal Son). We talked about how the father in the story is like God the Father always ready to forgive us. As an added highlight, the students were able to act out this story. They made stick puppets to help them.
In Language Arts class, we used our oral vocabulary words in sentences. We then used our letter tiles to spell and read r-controlled or words. We then played a partner game with abbreviations. Each student was given a card with either a word or abbreviation on it. Their job was match the words to the abbreviations. After that we read our word wall. Next, our focused switched to reading. We partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets and read two poems. We finished the morning by creating a popcorn bucket of popcorn words. They look yummy!
For gym class today we played two games. The first was called "Monsters." Each student stood in a hula hoop; on my whistle the students moved about to another hoop. After each round, I removed a hoop until only 1 was left. They loved fitting inside one hoop. The second game we played was"Houdini Hoops." We made a circle and moved the hula hoop around the circle without breaking hands. We are quite a flexible group!
In Math class today we learned about fractional parts. We used our pattern blocks to help us identify one half, one third, and one sixth.
Finally it was time for Social Studies. Today we talked about saving, buying, and trading.
Tomorrow will be an exciting day!
