Greetings! Today was a exciting day of learning and growing in first grade.
The excitement started right away in Religion class. We continued our study of the sacrament of Baptism. Today we learned that we receive God's grace, which his his life and love, when we were baptized. We also learned that water is important at Baptism. Following our discussion, we went over to church to see the baptismal font. The students were thrilled to see it up close.
Once we came back to school, we jumped into Language Arts. We practiced using our oral vocabulary words, reading long e and compound words, and using our sight words in sentences. We also talked about root words which we discovered is the same thing as base words. Next it was time to work on our fluency and comprehension. We partner read a story in our decodable readers and read a story in our anthology. While reading Koko and Penny we learned just how clever a gorilla is. This afternoon we practiced writing commas in a series. We finished the day by reading If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss and creating and writing about an unusual animal we would add to the zoo. The students really enjoyed this creative writing project.
In Math class today we practiced the sum of 10 facts. First we played a game. Pairs of students were given 10 pennies. One student took the pennies and divided them in their hands. Then he/she showed his/her partner one hand and the partner had to guess how many were in the other hand. The students really enjoyed this game. Then it was time to practice these facts using a wrap-up.
Just a reminder that tomorrow is gym class. Please remember your sneakers.
