Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Greetings! I hope everyone is enjoying your weekend and staying warm. It is hard to believe that a week ago on Friday it was 70 degrees and that this past Friday was 30 degrees and snowy.

Friday was a Seusstacular day in first grade. We had so much fun celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. But before celebrating, we had work to do.

We began our day by going to church. Msgr. Lockard reminded us that Lent is more than just praying and fasting. It is about making better choices and growing closer to God.

We wrapped up our week of learning in Language Arts class. We practiced using our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read long i words and word with inflected endings, and wrote sentences using our sight words. We then took our weekly assessment and practiced using see and saw in sentences.

Then it was time to celebrate Dr. Seuss. First we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. After reading that story, we practiced making patterns using fish. We then graphed Goldfish crackers on a graph and answered questions about our graph.

Next we read The Sneetches. Following that we wrote about what makes me special. We added our writing to a craft.

The fun really blossomed when we read Bartholomew and the Oobleck. After hearing that story, we got to feel Oobleck which is just corn starch and water. We discovered that it is hard and slimy. The students loved feeling it and were quite excited to take a bag home with them.

Finally, it was time for Art. We made a pot of gold using our handprints. I'll post pictures of the Art project next week.

Here are some pictures from today's celebration. For more pictures of the Oobleck excitement, head over to the Official Holy Name School Facebook page.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
