Jelly Bean Fun!

Greetings and thank you for another great virtual day of learning. These past two days have been so successful. I loved seeing their independence and confidence grow. Thank you for all that you did to help these past two days.

In Religion class today we reviewed the events of Holy Week by creating a cross. The cross consists of pictures of the events of Holy Week. The students are encouraged to display the cross as we enter into the Holy Three Days.

In Language Arts class, we practiced reading all of our sight words. We also took part in an Easter show and tell. The students did a great job writing clues as to what they put in their egg. I had a hard time guessing what was inside.

Then, we took a break from Language Arts to have some jellybean math fun. The students were given a bag of jelly beans. With them, they created different patterns, used them to measure different objects, and created a graph with them.

We ended the morning with Science. Today we talked about magnets and how they attract to or repel from objects. The students were then tasked to find objects in their house that attract and repel magnets.

This afternoon in Math, we continued to practice solving word problems. We are getting better at listening for clue words that will help us add or subtract.

Tomorrow we return to the classroom. It is a jean day and an early dismissal day. Have a great night!

A Fun Day!

Greetings! Wow, was today a great day! I loved seeing the children's excitement all day. I am so proud of how well they completed everything independently. They are such fantastic listeners!

In Religion class today we focused on the events of Holy Thursday. We talked about how Jesus washed his disciples feet and shared a meal of bread and wine with his friends. We focused on the washing of feet today. We talked about how that was Jesus' call to us to serve others; we then named ways we can serve others. To help us remember this event, we created a paper plate scene of washing feet.

In Language Arts, we practiced reading words with the diphthongs oi and oy. We read words and matched pictures to the words. Then, we worked on prepositions. We glued pictures based on what a sentence told us; then we identified the preposition in the sentence. Following that, we wrote about bunnies. We wrote about what they have, can do, and are. We added a craft to our writing.

We ended our morning with Science. Today we became our chapter on motion. We talked about how we can push or pull objects to move them. I hope everyone had fun building their mazes.

This afternoon in Math, we practiced solving word problems. We are working on figuring out whether to add or subtract. We will practice more tomorrow.

Have a great night!

The Start of Holy Week!

Greetings! This is Holy Week, a week where we remember what Jesus did for us so long ago. As we move throughout the week, let us remember Jesus' great love for us, spend a few extra minutes in prayer, and continue to do good for others.

In Religion class today, we prayed the Stations of the Cross. We watched as Fr. Brian led us around the Stations he taped last year and prayed along with him.

We began Language Arts by reading in our small groups. We then began a new week of learning; this week will focus on how we build buildings and other structures. We learned five new oral vocabulary words (structure, contended, intend, marvelous, and project). We then worked on asking and answering questions as we read a folktale; I loved how they paid attention and knew what to expect when a wolf appeared. From there we learned how to blend and read words with the diphthongs oi and oy. After that we learned our new sight words and vocabulary words. Finally, we put our new skills to work as we read a nonfiction piece about shipbuilding called The Joy of a Ship

This after we learned about prepositions. We read a story and identified all of the prepositions in it. After that we wrote sentences using common prepositional phrases. Then, we switched our focus to writing. Today, the students were given a peep. They wrote a paragraph about what they did with their peep.

In Math class, we continued to practice adding three one-digit numbers. They are quite good at this.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a virtual day. See you online!

Preparing for Holy Week!

Greetings! I hope everyone had a nice Friday and didn't get blown away! It sure was a windy day! We had a great early dismissal day in first grade.

In Religion class, we began our study of Holy Week. Today we focused on Palm Sunday. We read the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem. We talked about how the people greeted him by waving palm branches and shouting Hosanna. We then made our own mosaic palm branches.

We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read words with diphthong ou and ow and words with the inflectional endings -er and -est. We also wrote sentences using our sight words and took our weekly assessment. We ended class by coloring a doctor. We added band-aids around him and wrote 'ou' words on them.

We had an early lunch. We then watched The Proud Tree, a short video about a tree who boasts and brags who then has a change of heart as he becomes the cross that Jesus dies on. It is a great video about humility and love and prepared us for Holy Week.

Here are pictures from our Easter egg writing project:

Have a great weekend!

Enthusiasm in Math!

Greetings! Happy Thursday! Wow, was it nice outside today! It was hard to come in from recess and even harder from gym class. I hope everyone was able to get outside after school and enjoy the sunshine!

In Religion class today, we wrapped up our chapter on Jesus being the Light of the World. We reviewed how we can be light for others and how we are called to be peacemakers.

In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary words, read words with the diphthongs ou and ow, read words with the inflectional endings -er and -est, and reviewed our sight words. We spent time working on our fluency today by partner reading both a story in our decodable reader and our story from yesterday. We also worked on our comprehension as we read a nonfiction piece about sound and completed pages in our close reading companion. Finally, we practiced using a, an, this, and that in sentences.

In Math class today, we learned how to add three one-digit numbers. We learned to do this by using our linking cubes, drawing a picture, or adding two numbers and then the third. The students just loved doing this and kept asking for more problems. I just loved their enthusiasm today.

In Social Studies today we learned the difference between goods (things we buy) and services (things we do). We sorted pictures based on whether they were a good or service.

We had a special Science class today since we are leaving early tomorrow. Today we reviewed what we learned about sound, light, and heat.

Finally, it was time for Gym. We so enjoyed playing outside.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is an early dismissal day. We will be leaving at noon. Have a great night!

Easter Writing Fun!

Greetings! Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone is doing well and are having a great week!

In Religion class today we talked about how we make choices and how those choices should be good choices. When we are not sure what to do, we need to ask ourselves 'What Would Jesus Do?' He will guide us in making the loving choice.

In Language Arts, we reviewed our oral vocabulary, read words with the diphthongs ou and ow, spelled and read words with the inflectional endings -er and -est, and practiced our sight words and vocabulary words. Then we switched our focus to fluency and comprehension. We partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets. We also read Whistle for Willie. After reading this story, we wrote about its problem and the solution. Finally, we practiced using a, an, that, and this in sentences.

In Math class today we continued to practice subtraction. Today, we mixed the problems. Some required regrouping and some did not. The students are very good at knowing when to regroup or not.

In Spanish class today we learned the Spanish names for orange (naranja), soup (sopa), water (agua), meat (carne), apple (manzana), banana (platano), and sandwich (sandwich).

We ended our day with an Easter writing project. We read The Easter Egg by Jan Brett. We talked about how each Easter egg was unique and special in its own way. Then using paint, the students decorated an egg. After that we wrote about why our egg is incredible. I'll post pictures tomorrow once everything has dried.

Have a great night!

Growing Confidence!

Greetings! Happy Tuesday! We had another great day of learning in first grade.

In Religion class today, we talked about how Jesus wants us to be peacemakers. We talked about what that means and what we can do to be peacemakers.

In Language Arts, we answered questions using our oral vocabulary words. We then used our letter tiles to spell and read words with ou and ow. Following that, we practiced spelling and reading words with the inflectional endings -er and -est; we remembered when to change the y to an i, drop the final e, and double the final consonant. As one student put it, there is so much to remember! From there, we practiced using our sight words and vocabulary words in sentences. We ended the morning working on our comprehension skills. This week we are again focusing on problem and solution. We reread Now, What's That Sound and read our decodable reader and wrote about the problem and solution in each story.

This afternoon we learned when to use this and that in sentences. We also wrote another paragraph. Today we wrote about why we love Easter. We wrote the topic and concluding sentences together; the students wrote the detail sentences. Didn't they do a nice job?

In Math class today, we practiced subtracting with regrouping. We are doing much better with this concept. The students were feeling more confident today as we practiced.

Have a great night!

A Sunny Monday!

Greetings on this sunny March day! I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine today. Just seeing the sun makes me think of spring and brings a smile to my face.

In Religion class today we continued our Lenten journal reflection page. Today we focused on praying to Jesus. We talked about what it means to pray, where we can pray, and things to pray about. As we get closer to Holy Week we are reminded to continue our Lenten observance of prayer.

We began Language Arts by reading in our small groups and completing activities in Seesaw. After that, we began a new week of learning; this week our focus is on sounds. We learned our five new oral vocabulary words (volume, senses, distracted, nervous, and squeaky). We listened to a fable and answered questions after reading the story. Next, we learned how to blend and read words with ow and ou, words like town and loud. Following that, we learned our new sight words and vocabulary words. We ended our morning by reading Now, What's That Sound, a realistic fiction story about children trying to figure out what is making a sound.

This afternoon in Language Arts, we learned when to use a and an in sentences. We also wrote our first persuasive paragraph; we wrote about why we love the zoo.

In Math class today, we learned how to subtract with regrouping. It is taking some time getting used to regrouping a ten for ten ones. We will continue practicing tomorrow.

As promised, here is a picture from Friday's Art class. Enjoy!

Honoring St. Joseph!

Greetings! Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a nice day to end the week.

At Mass this morning, we celebrated the feast of St. Joseph. Fr. Brian talked to us about how St. Joseph was humble and trusted God. He reminded us to do likewise. This year, Pope Francis has dedicated it to St. Joseph. May we always turn to him for guidance. Good St. Joseph . . . Pray for us.

We wrapped up yet another week of learning in Language Arts today. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read r-controlled -or, -ore, and -oar words, spelled and read abbreviations, and wrote sentences using our sight words. We also took our weekly assessment. Finally, we spent some time working on our reading fluency; we reviewed our phonics sounds, read nonsense words, and partner read a passage.

In Math class today, we began to learn how to subtract with regrouping. We used our base ten blocks to help us. We learned that when we can't subtract the ones, we need to regroup a ten. We take that ten and add it to the ones. Then we can subtract. We will be practicing this more next week.

In Science class today we focused on heat. We identified things that give off heat and how heat can move through objects.

Finally, it was time for Art. Today we created a bunny silhouette. The students were given an outline of a bunny. They glued pieces of tissue paper around the outline to create a stained glass look. Finally, they added a sparkly pom-pom ball for a tail. I'll add picture next week once everything has dried.

Have a great weekend!

Finally, we practiced identifying and using adjectives that compare.

This week we have been learning how to blend and read r-controlled -or, -ore, and -oar words. Today, we took what we learned and added it to a craft. We wrote six r-controlled words on popcorn kernels and then created a popcorn bucket with the words. Here are some of the finished products:

In Math class today we continued our practice of subtracting without regrouping. The children are doing so well with this. I am so pleased.

For Gym today, we once again exercised to GoNoodle videos. They loved it.

We ended our day with Social Studies. Today, we talked about the difference between needs (things we must have) and wants (things we like to have). We sorted pictures based on whether they showed a want or need.

Have a great night!

Greetings! We had a great day of in person learning today! Again, thank you so much for yesterday. I really appreciate all that you did!

In Religion class today we learned about the words and actions that are part of the sacrament of Baptism. We learned that before a baby is baptized, the priest, parents, and godparents trace the Sign of the Cross on the baby's forehead. Then, water is poured over the baby as the priest says special words.

Language Arts was full of learning today. We reviewed our oral vocabulary words. We practiced reading r-controlled -ar words. We also practiced identifying the plural of words when there is a spelling change. In addition, we practiced our sight words and vocabulary words. Welcome March!

Greetings on this first day of March. I hope everyone had a nice weekend!

In Religion class today, we focused on our Lenten journal. This week we talked about sharing. We defined what it means to share, gave examples of sharing at home and in school, and talked about how Jesus shared fishes and loaves with 5,000 people. As we continue throughout this week and Lent, we will focus on sharing with others.

We began Language Arts by working in our small reading groups. We then began a new week of learning which will focus on sorting and classifying objects. We learned five new oral vocabulary words (distinguish, classify, entire, organize, startled). We then worked on making predictions as we read the classic fable "Goldilocks and The Three Bears." Next, we learned how to blend and read r-controlled ar words; it was fun reading like a pirate today. After that, we learned our new sight words and vocabulary words. This afternoon we worked on joining sentences together using the words and, but, and or.

In Math class today, we practiced continuing patterns, finding more and less than a number, and using our critical thinking skills to solve problems.

This week is Read Across America week. In honor of this week, we will be reading a Dr. Seuss book a day and completing an activity that goes along with the book. Today we read If I Ran The Zoo. After reading the story, we created our own animal for the zoo, gave it a name, told what it eats and where it lives. The students were quite creative with this!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a virtual day. Please check your email for important information!
