Greetings! Happy Halloween! Today was a spooktacular day in first grade. We really enjoyed our Halloween celebration!
We began our day by practicing with our eighth grade friends for tomorrow's prayer service. The prayer service will begin at 1:15 in the church. We are quite excited to dress as our given saints as a reminder to live as they did.
After a Guidance class, we had some Halloween fun. We read Go Away Big Green Monster. We then created our own green monsters. I loved seeing their creativity come alive as they designed their monster. We ended our project by writing about something our monster can do.
After lunch, it was time to celebrate Halloween. We got into our costumes and paraded around the cafeteria for all to see. Back in our classroom, we played games and made a spider web craft. Thank you to all of the parents who came today to help. The students really enjoyed it. I am sure they will fall asleep fast tonight.
Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Fun!
Greetings! Happy Wednesday! Today was a great day! We worked hard this morning and celebrated this afternoon.
In Religion class today, we wrapped up our chapter on the Great Commandment. We reviewed what it was and how we can love God, ourselves, and others.
In Language Arts class, we reread Thump Thump Helps Out and identified the characters, setting, and events in the story. After talking about them, we wrote them in a graphic organizer. We then read our decodable reader and discussed those same literary elements in them.
In Math class today we examined a number sentence to see if it was true or false. We used linking cubes to help us to do that.
For Gym class today, we went outside to the playground. I enjoyed watching a group of students trying to catch leaves as they fell from the tree. They had so much fun doing that.
After Gym, Mrs. McMullen came to read to us two Halloween stories. She also gave the students masks to wear as she read. Needless to say, they loved them.
Then it was time to carve a pumpkin. We took turns pulling out the seeds. We then worked together to determine what the eyes, nose, and mouth should look like. After a few minutes of waiting we had our pumpkin just in time for our Halloween party tomorrow. We ended our day by writing the steps in the process of carving a pumpkin.
Tomorrow is our Halloween party. Please don't forget your costume. Also, tomorrow is a jean day!

Creepy Learning!
Greetings! I hope everyone is enjoying their week and the beautiful weather. We had a tough time coming inside from recess today. On my way home the sun was shining through a stretch of trees. It was just so beautiful.
Also, on my way home, I pass a Brethren church. They always have neat signs. Today there was a question. I'll answer the question at the end of this post. How does Moses make tea?
In Religion class today we talked about how everyone is our neighbor. We read the story of the Good Samaritan and then acted it out. We talked about how Jesus told this story to show that everyone is our neighbor.
We began Language Arts by reading Creepy Carrots. After that we illustrated and wrote about what we would do if creepy carrots followed us. Here is what they did:
We then jumped back into our week of learning by reviewing our oral vocabulary words we learned yesterday and then learned three new words (connections, enjoy, and rely). After that we worked on rereading for understanding as we read about a man and his biblioburro, a library carried by donkeys. Following that we used our letter tiles to spell and read words with the digraphs sh, th, and ng. After that we learned how to read closed syllable words like rabbit and picnic. We ended class by using our sight words in sentences.
Before lunch, we had some pumpkin from. Today we talked about the life cycle of a pumpkin. We read a story to help illustrate how a pumpkin goes from a seed to and orange pumpkin. We created a life cycle pumpkin wheel to help us remember the stages.
Before Math class today we headed over to church to practice for the All Saints' Day prayer service. The students are getting excited about it.
We ended our day with Math class. Today we learned how to solve a number sentence when a part is missing.
Just a reminder that Gym is tomorrow. Wear your sneakers to school. Also, please send in all Halloween treats. They will be bagged tomorrow.
Here's the answer to my riddle: Hebrews it!

Halloween Week!
Greetings! Happy Monday! Today was the start of a fun week in first grade. We will be celebrating Halloween and honoring the saints this week. I can tell that the children had tons of fun this weekend trick-or-treating. It took awhile to get them going today.
Religion was a busy class today. We began by practicing for our prayer service on Friday. Then we came back and reviewed the Great Commandment. After that we talked about ways we can love ourselves. Finally, we completed our ARISE lesson for the week. Today we talked about how we as Catholics are called to be a family and help each other. We wrote about ways to help our families, class, and community.
We began a new week of learning in Language Arts today. We learned two new oral vocabulary words (leadership and admire). We also worked on rereading as we read the story The Story of Martin Luther King, Jr. Following that we learned how to blend and read words with the digraphs sh, th, and ng. We also learned our new sight words for the week. We ended our morning by reading Thump Thump Helps Out.
This afternoon in Language Arts we practiced telling the difference between common and proper nouns. We also began our study of pumpkins. Today we learned the names of the different parts of a pumpkin.
In Math class today we worked on writing fact families. We know that a fact family has four math sentences: two addition and two subtraction. After several minutes, we were writing them very quickly!
Have a great night! Don't forget your saint costume tomorrow!

Watercolor Fun!
Greetings! Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a fantastic day. We sure did in first grade.
Today was a Faith Family Mass. During Mass, Fr. Brian encouraged us to to hold onto grudges but to take time now to fix things. We encouraged us to always be faithful followers of Jesus.
After Mass once we all came back from our Faith Families, we prayed the fifth decade of the Glorious Mysteries. Today also marked the end of us praying the rosary as a class. The children's rosaries came home today. They are encouraged to find a special spot to keep their rosary (they are blessed) and to continue to pray the rosary at home.
We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts. Today we used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read words with end blends and the inflectional ending -ing, and wrote sentences using our sight words. We took our weekly assessment and practiced writing possessive nouns.
In Math class today we reviewed solving word problems by writing a subtraction sentence. We also talked about fact families. Given a number bond, we are able to write two addition and two subtraction fact families. We will continue to practice this next week.
In Science class today we talked about habitats. We looked at the desert, forest, and ocean. We talked about the different plants and animals we find there.
Finally, it was time for Art. Today we made a spider web. To do this, we used our white crayon to draw it on white construction paper. We then used watercolor paints to paint over our drawing. The students really enjoyed painting with watercolors.
Have a fabulous weekend!

Coloring Our World!
Greetings on this colorful day! It was so nice to see the students all in their different color shirts today. Thank you for helping them see the importance in saying no to drugs. This afternoon, the whole school went outside and spelled out "Drug Free!" on the parking lot as a reminder that we can color our world by being drug free.
Today in Religion class we learned the Great Commandment which is to love God, love others, and love ourselves. We also spent time talking about how to love God. To help us remember the Great Commandment, we created giant hearts. Here they are:
In Language Arts class, we reviewed our oral vocabulary words, spelled and read words with end blends and inflectional endings, and played a game with our sight words. We also partner read a story in our decodable reader booklet as well as our story from yesterday At a Pond. We ended class by reading a poem and completing pages in our close reading companion to help us build comprehension when reading poetry.
In Math class today we again solved subtraction word problems. I am amazed at how fast they can solve them using so many techniques.
We ended our day with Social Studies. Today we reviewed everything we have learned this year in class about our community. Next week, we will begin our study of geography.
Tomorrow is Friday. It is a Faith Family Mass day. The students are to wear their Christ is RICH in me shirts to school. Don't forget your library book!

This afternoon in Language Arts, we wrote about the main idea and key details from the story. We also practiced writing possessive nouns.
For Gym class today, we headed outside to the playground. Yes, it was windy, but with the sun shining, the fresh air felt good. This may have been our last Gym class outside for a while.
In Math class today we practiced solving subtraction word problems. We know that we can write a subtraction sentence, use a number bond, draw a picture, or use manipulatives to solve the problem.
Just a reminder that first grade needs to wear a green shirt tomorrow!

A Rainy Day!
Greetings on this rainy, dreary Tuesday. I hope everyone was able to enjoy the day! The students enjoyed wearing their flip flops, slides, and sandals today as we remember that doing drugs make us flop.
We began our day by going to Adoration. We spent some quiet time talking with Jesus asking him to help those we know and asking him to help us have a good day.
We began Language Arts by working in our literacy centers before jumping back into our week of learning. We reviewed the oral vocabulary words we learned yesterday and then learned three new words (hibernate, tranquil, and tolerate). After that we worked on rereading as we read a story about animals in the desert. Following that we used our sound boxes to segment words. Next, we used our letter tiles to spell and read words with end blends. We ended the morning by learning about the inflectional ending -ing and using our sight words in sentences.
This afternoon in Language Arts we practiced using possessive nouns in sentences. We then reread The Best Spot and wrote about the main idea (topic) and details from the story. We ended our day by reading our decodable reader and doing the same thing.
In Math class today we continued to write subtraction sentences to solve a problem. We are able to look at a picture and do this. Tomorrow we will do this when given a written problem.
Just a reminder that tomorrow's theme for Red Ribbon Week is that Drugs are Old School. Students may dress in a past decade and wear jeans and sneakers to school!

A Great Day!
Greetings! Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had a nice long weekend. I did enjoy the extra day off. It was nice to relax, do some shopping, and catch up on some reading.
In Religion class today we talked about how God always cares for us and how we do not need to worry because of that. We also completed the second week of the ARISE program. Today we focused on solidarity and how we are all part of God's family and how we need to help everyone. Finally, we prayed the first two decades of the Sorrowful Mysteries.
We began Language Arts class by working in our literacy centers. From there we began a new week of learning. Today we learned two new oral vocabulary words (shelter and materials). We also worked on making predictions as we read 3 Little Dassies. Following that we learned how to blend and read short u words which was followed by learning our new sight words. We ended the morning by reading a fantasy story about cubs called Cubs in a Hut.
This afternoon we learned about singular and plural nouns. We focused on how to make a noun plural. Most times we can just add -s. However, if the word ends in an x, s, ss, we need to add -es.
In Penmanship class this week we will be practicing writing the letter A.
In Math class today we practiced solving subtraction sentences. Today we used a number line to help us count backwards to find the answer.
We finished our bats from Friday's Art class this morning. Here they are:
Just a reminder tomorrow is already Wednesday. Please remember your Gym shoes. Also, book orders are due tomorrow.
Have a great night!

Firemen Visit!
Greetings on this fabulous Friday! Today was a great day to end our week.
For Mass today we sat with our Faith Families. During Mass we were reminded to always turn to God especially when we are having a bad day. After Mass, we prayed the fifth decade of the Luminous Mysteries in our classroom.
This morning we had a fire drill with the local fire companies. The students did very well exiting the building quickly and quietly. After the fire drill, the firemen stuck around to talk to the children about fire safety. They even practiced crawling low to avoid the smoke.
We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read short e words and words with the inflectional ending -ed. We wrote sentences using our sight words and took our weekly assessment.
To help us practice subtraction, we played SPLAT in Math class today. The students worked in pairs. One child put a some linking cubes on the desk while the other child counted them. Then, the first child took some away while the second child closed his/her eyes. Then, he/she had to guess how many were missing.
We wrapped up our study of animals in Science class. We reviewed the needs of animals, their different body coverings, and how parents care for their young.
Finally it was time for Art class. Today we made Halloween bats. The students accordion folded a circle and then cut it in half to create the wings. We glued them onto the body and added ears. We will be adding neon googly eyes on Tuesday (I forgot them at home). I'll post pictures then.
Enjoy your long weekend. See you on Tuesday!

Fire Safety Week!
Greetings on this gorgeous fall day. It just can't get any more beautiful outside. It is on a day like this that I really stop and thank God for all of his creation.
In Religion class today we read the story of Zaccheaus. We talked about how Jesus loved all people no matter what. We also talked about how we need to respect all people just like Jesus did. We ended class by praying the fourth decade of the Luminous Mysteries.
Language Arts was quite productive today. We began by reviewing our oral vocabulary words. Next we wrote and read short e words and words with the inflectional ending -ed. Following that we reviewed our sight words. Then we partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets and the story from yesterday. After that we read a nonfiction piece about firefighters and completed pages in our close reading companion. Finally, we practiced finding nouns in sentences.
With this being fire safety week, we spent time today reviewing fire safety rules. We talked about calling 911 in an emergency, not hiding from firefighters, staying low, getting out and staying out, and finding our meeting place. Here are pictures from the craft projects we did this week:
In Math class today we practiced crossing out to find the answer in a subtraction problem. The students drew a picture and crossed out to find how much less than a number it is. We also worked on writing subtraction sentences.
In Social Studies today we talked about Christopher Columbus. We created a small booklet to honor him.
Just a reminder that tomorrow is a Faith Family Mass. The students can wear their red "Christ is RICH in Me" shirts to school.

A Beautiful Fall Day!
Greetings on this beautiful fall day! It was so hard to come in from recess. We could have stayed out there all afternoon. It was such a perfect weather day.
In Religion class today we talked about how John the Baptist prepared people for Jesus by telling them to love God and others. We also prayed the third decade of the Luminous Mysteries.
In Language Arts class we reviewed our oral vocabulary words. Then we used our sound boxes to segment short e words. After that we practiced reading short e words and words with the inflectional ending -ed. Next we practiced reading our sight words. Following that we partner read a story in our decodable reader. We finished the morning by reading and discussing The Red Hat, a realistic fiction story about a firefighter.
This afternoon in Language Arts, we completed pages in our close reading companion related to our story. We practiced identifying nouns in sentences. Finally, we took our writing from yesterday and added it to a fireman craft. We have to put the finishing touches on our firemen tomorrow.
For Gym today we headed back outside to enjoy the fall weather. It won't be long before our Gym classes are inside.
In Math class today we began our chapter on subtraction. We learned that subtraction means take away. The key for us is to be able to count backwards.
Have a great night!

Reading About Our Community!
Greetings! Happy Tuesday! It was sure nice to see the sun shining today. We did miss it yesterday.
We were quite busy in Religion class today. We wrapped up our chapter on the early life of Jesus. We reviewed how Mary said yes to God, how Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem, and how he grew up in Nazareth. Following that we had our first ARISE lesson. For the next six weeks we will be looking at the social teachings of the church. Today we talked about how everyone everywhere deserves respect. We ended class by praying the second decade of the Luminous Mysteries.
We began Language Arts class by working in our literacy centers. Then we jumped back into our week of learning. We reviewed our oral vocabulary words from yesterday and learned three new words (astonishing, fortunately, and equipment). After that we worked on making predictions as we read a nonfiction piece about jobs in our community. Then, we used our letter tiles to spell and read short e words. Next, we learned about the inflectional ending
-ed and how when we add it to a word it describes something in the past. Following that we practiced using our sight words in sentences. We ended our morning by rereading Good Job, Ben and writing about the characters, setting, and events in the story.
This afternoon in Language Arts we sorted nouns based on whether they name a person, place or thing. We read our decodable reader and answered questions about the characters, setting, and events. Finally, we wrote about firefighters. We wrote about what they have, what they do, and who they are. We will be adding our writing to a craft tomorrow.
In Math class today we took a test on addition. Tomorrow our focus will switch to subtraction.

Fun With Nouns!
Greetings! Happy Monday! It was different to see the rain today. We have been so use to seeing the sunshine; it was different to see the gray skies.
We began our day with Religion class. Today we talked about how Jesus grew up in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph and how they showed their love for God. We also prayed the first decade of the Luminous Mysteries.
We began Language Arts class by working in our literacy centers. Then we jumped into our week of learning. We learned two new oral vocabulary words (community and occupation). We then worked on making predictions as we read Millie Waits for the Mail. Following that we learned how to blend and read short e words. After that we learned our five new sight words for the week. We finished the morning by reading the realistic fiction story Good Job, Ben!
This afternoon in Language Arts we learned about nouns. We listed the various people, places, things, and animals we see in our community. Then each student took a noun, illustrated it, and added it to our Noun Town. Here it is:
This week in Penmanship we will practice writing the letter O.
In Math class we reviewed addition. Tomorrow we will take our test.
Finally, this week is Fire Safety Week. We will be spending time this week reviewing fire safety rules. Today we reviewed what to do when our clothes catch on fire. We know to stop, drop, and roll.
Have a great night!

Not So Scary Art!
Greetings! Happy Friday! Today was such a fantastic day in first grade. I just really enjoyed working with the students today. They are such a great group of kids.
We began our day with Mass. Today, Fr. Brian talked to us about St. Francis. He reminded us to be humble like him. After Mass we prayed the fifth decade of the Joyful Mysteries. Next week we will pray the Luminous Mysteries.
We wrapped up another week of learning in Language Arts today. We used our oral vocabulary words in sentences, read words with r-blends and s-blends, finished possessive phrases, and wrote sentences using our sight words. After lunch we took our weekly assessment.
In Math class today we used our critical thinking skills to solve problems. Their math knowledge impresses me so much.
In Science class we talked about how parents care for their young. We illustrated a picture of an adult animal taking care of its baby.
Finally, it was time for Art. Today our focused switched to Halloween art. We made not so scary Frankensteins. Aren't they cute? I can't wait to hang them in the hall!
Have a great weekend!

Another Warm Day!
Greetings on this warm Thursday Ocotber day. I will admit that it was another warm day in first grade. We did our best to stay cool with extra drink breaks, but we all agreed that a cooler day will be appreciated.
In Religion class today we talked about how Jesus grew up in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. We talked about how Jesus helped and obeyed his parents and how we need to do what Jesus did.
We began Language Arts by reviewing our oral vocabulary words. Next we used our whiteboards to write and read r-blend and s-blend words. After that we completed a worksheet where we finished the possessive phrase. After that we read our word wall and talked about diagrams. We finished the morning by partner reading a story in our decodable reader and our story from yesterday. This afternoon we completed pages in our close reading companion that helped us build an understanding of diagrams. We also practiced writing sentences correctly.
In Math class today we solved addition word problems. I wrote a problem on the board and the students solved it using whatever method they liked. I loved seeing them use different methods and hearing how they used their methods to solve the problems.
We finished our day with Social Studies. Today we talked about community helpers. Each student was given a clue about the job of a community helper. They had to guess which helper it was. After that, they drew a picture of their community helper.
Tomorrow will be busy. We have Mass (this is NOT a Faith Family Mass). We also have Library, Art, and a guest reader. Stay cool!

Warm Wednesday!
Greetings on this warm Wednesday. I am hoping that this hot weather takes a little vacation. We will enjoy some cooler, more seasonable temperatures.
In Religion class today we read the Christmas story. Our Religion curriculum begins the year by learning about Jesus from his birth to his public ministry to his death. Today we learned that Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem.
As usual, Language Arts was busy. We reviewed our oral vocabulary. We also practiced reading r-blend and s-blend words along with possessive phrases. Following that we practiced reading our sight words. We then switched gears and partner read a story in our decodable reader booklets. We ended the morning by reading and discussing Move It, a nonfiction story about how we use different parts of our bodies to move.
This afternoon in Language Arts we completed pages in our close reading companion to help build our comprehension skills. We also wrote sentences correctly remembering to start them with a capital letter and to put a punctuation mark at the end.
For Gym today, it was time spent on the playground. I enjoyed watching the students play and interact with each other. They had smiles on their faces and sweat pouring down.
In Math today we practiced solving real world problems. I wrote problems and the students solved them using various methods. I loved seeing all of the different methods they used. No matter how they solved the problem, they all got the same answer.
Have a great night!

Hello October!
Greetings! Happy October! It is hard to believe that we are already in the second month of the school year. I can tell you that the students are already looking forward to Halloween. They started talking about it yesterday.
We began our day by attending Eucharistic Adoration. We spent some quiet time in church praying to Jesus, asking him to help others and help us have a good day. When we returned to the classroom, we prayed the second decade of the Joyful Mysteries.
We began Language Arts class by working in our literacy centers. Then we jumped back into our week of learning. We reviewed our oral vocabulary words from yesterday and learned three new words (agree, difficult, and exhausted). We then worked on asking and answering questions as we read a fable about a rabbit and coyote. After that we practiced segmenting words into sounds using our sound boxes. Next, we used our letter tiles to spell and read r-blend and s-blend words. Following that we learned about possessives. Finally, we practiced using our sight words in sentences.
This afternoon we reread Move and Grin and wrote details from the story. Next, we read our decodable reader and answered questions about the details from that. Finally, we practiced completing sentences by identifying the missing word in a sentence.
In Math class today we continued to practice writing addition number sentences for a picture. Today, after writing the sentence, we came up with a story to go with it. They did great with this.
Just a reminder that tomorrow is Gym day!
